Area 51 vs. DDR obsession

Jeff's avatar
I had to share this with you. As many of you know, the video game Dance Dance Revolution has this cult-like following, and it crosses over into the coaster enthusiast realm as well.

A new home version, DDRmax, has been in the works for the US Playstation 2 system for some time. If you think we're bad, check out this thread for the game (which releases next week)... it started in January.

DDRfreak.com

Sure is a pretty huge contrast from our obsession!

It is pretty interesting to compare. I was a major DDR addict and was on DDR Freak nearly every day last year. I'm still pretty good (in my view, at least... I can full combo B4U Glorious Style Maniac and can pass every song) but I haven't played it as much lately. And last year I thought my CP obsession was turning into a DDR obsession... now it is like the exact opposite.

I still think we should have some sort of GTTP DDR gathering...

Thank you for rubbing everyone's faces in your accomplishments. I'm glad you can dance so well.

The (very high and growing) coaster enthusiast following of DDR doesn't seem to go the other way around. Not many of the DDR enthusiasts are coaster enthusiasts also. That's kind of a good thing though, I think. I'm not sure I'd be able to spend a day at a park with some of the DDR enthusiasts I've met.

Sorry if I came off as arrogant, it wasn't my intention.

By the way I agree about the "not being able to spend a day with some of the DDR enthusiasts". In fact that's probably one of the main reasons why I don't go to any DDR gatherings anymore.

Where did that come from, Michael Darling? I didn't see anything wrong with his post.

I know what he was referring to, but you didn't come off as rubbing anything in anyone's face.

Need I even mention that I posted that on this very site a LONG time ago?

Besides, we're already having one next week for the cool people I trust to visit my house.

Keep rubbing it in, Jeff. Hopefully I'll be able to hold my own on closing day against you younger people.

According to the Electronics Boutique website, DDRMax should be in stores on October 30th at a suggested retail price of $39.99.

Add in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Tiger Woods 2003 and it's going to be a very costly week!

If only they had a decent DDR at the park...

I agree. Now that I know what's out there (my nearest mall has a 4th mix machine), it does suck.

One of the things that I don't get is that the various Japanese import machines are wildly popular and apparently in demand here. Heck, even the PS2 versions get imported with Japanese Playstations just to play it. Is Konami stupid or blind?

Jeff, are you talking about the one at Southpark Mall? I saw you there a few weeks ago actually. I am one who does get out and away from the computer every once and a while. Oh, yeah, they had a competition there over the summer if you weren't aware. Pretty impressive stuff from what I saw. I haven't had the guts to actually play yet though.

Jeff, I think I read a couple months ago that Konami of America was closing its arcade game division and just focusing on home platforms like PS2 and such. Maybe that says something... so many places are just importing the Japanese versions that there really is no more need for their American versions (although they could have developed a new American arcade version, like they did with Konamix on PS). I think that the majority of DDRers are still people who aren't interested in importing games from Japan for their PSones or PS2s, and by releasing domestic games like DDRMAX coming up for PS2, they have potential buyers in both the "import" crowd (who may have waited for the domestic version) and the "domestic" crowd.

4th Mix Plus, 5th Mix, or 7th Mix would all be awesome to have at the park. :)

Someone should mention this to the games people up there. I mean, we'd single-handedly support a better machine up there. We play the crappy USA version up there every visit, and it's rare for it to sit dormant for more than five minutes!

I'm not sure if I would want the CP machine updated. Where else can 2 people do five songs for 75 cents? Its kind of nice not having to pay a buck a piece for 3 songs like all the other machines. If CP could update thier machine without raising the price I would be thrilled.

They can set it for whatever they want though. The 4th mix machine near me is .50 for three songs.

I agree. A new machine would be devine.

I still maintain that the best machine I've played has been the 5th mix at Fun Spot. Just like Cedar Point's DDR machine you get 5 songs for 75 cents, and I just love the collection of songs 5th mix has to offer.

I think if some of us made a suggestion to Cedar Point to update their machine, they might take the hint...
