Announcement time... the delay is bad!

Is everybody sure that the early announcement of MF was positive for CP?? Looking back, Cedar Point's 3rd Quarter numbers were not all that great that year. They did have a decent 2nd Quarter, and the weather that fall was very nice. I only remember the last HalloWeekend as being bad. Cedar Point showed a very little increase in attendance the 2000 season.

It could be that even though "we" were all happy to hear the announcement, it did not give the return Cedar Point was hoping as far as attendance and per capita spending.

This doesn't mean that Jeff's points are not good enough reason to announce the attraction now, but I could understand why Cedar Point would hold back, the season pass holders are a small part of their revenue compared to the 1 and 2 day guests.

Do you think the new ride will make a bigger splash than MF did? Is that possible?

"If we go any faster, she'll blow apart for sure!"

Not if they wait too much longer... and why make a bigger splash than MF after only 3 years?

Metaphorically speaking that is ;)

There's also the possibility that next year will not be as big as originally expected, although I highly doubt it. Remember that Xcelerator went up completely in about two or three months. Let's not forget that a major expansion like Camp Snoopy was not announced until the offseason, as was WT and PT. Just a possibility that no one has mentioned yet.

Was Power Tower annouced during the off-season? I know it was after construction started, but I'm pretty sure it was before the end of the season.

I have a wacky thought. Could there be another park out there considering a similar installation with similar statistics?

If so, then perhaps Cedar Point Execs are afraid of annoucing and then being one upped by someone else.

Where this becomes wacky is this: If this is indeed a launched coaster then how hard would it be to change the height of the top hat (assuming there is one)? You would have to change the launch speed but you might not have to change anything else about the ride.

If this is true then maybe CP wants to be sure the record stands for more than half a season, as was the case with MF.

I assume construction will still start immediately after the park closes, or maybe even during bonus weekends. I guess we will need someone with an airplane to give us updates.

Gemini, you are correct. The news release for Power Tower says "Distributed August 1997". If memory serves me right, it was like the 28th of August.

I should have researched my point about Power Tower better. But needless to say, when three 250' S&S towers are standing in the middle of the park with no accompanying announcement, it's not that difficult to figure out what it is and an announcement was made simply for the sake of the media. Enthusiasts and park goers knew what was "new for '98"

I agree completely with Jeff's thoughts and Old Timer Tim's also. I do remember MFs announcement and seeing the layout picture on site in the park during the previous season made us all very excited about next season. Later, we were all kind of miffed by the lack of detail in the park around WT's announcement time.

I offer this afterthought... MF's PR and details were released very early on. We knew in advance CP was about to have the baddest, tallest coaster on the planet. Construction started and without any warning before MF was even completed a coaster on the other side of the planet overtook MF's height record, SD2K. While I feel MF is superior in may respects (in theory though not ever having ridden SD2K), SD2K wins in height and that is something CP has always wanted to boast. I wonder now if SD2K had released early details before CP, if CP would have changed plans mid-stream and added 10' on to MF's height to hold on to the title. I'm sure it would have cost CP some $$$ to do it, but it could have been done.

There was already track at CP in December 1998, at which point it really would not have mattered.

This wait is making me angry! Business aside, I'm tired of waiting to find out what it is.

If we ever figure out what the reasoning was behind this wait, we'll probably hit our heads on the table....

Speaking of track..does anyone have any idea if track is even at the park yet?

Why feel angry? Do you think that since you know some info about the new ride that you're entitled to an announcement? You're just another peep in the GP, just like most of us. The only reason we think it should be announced is because we think it would be best for the park, not so you can boast what it is...

Track is undoubtedly manufactured and probably has been for quite some time, these rides are dones 2-3 years in advance if you believe what you see on the Discovery channel shows. If it isn't in Ohio yet, it's probably at a shipping yard or on a ship on it's way here now.

Perhaps it's time to take the boat out near the local docks around Sandusky and look for some barges unloading sea containers and putting the track onto trucks or into a holding area? For all of you conspiracy types..

Infamous Rob

Wicked Twister wasn't planned 2 years in advanced...which leads me to believe it was a filler ride...just like one of the park officials said that the addition for 2002 would be.

MFJedi I can gauruntee there are no barges with Shipping containers in Sandusky Bay. They come of of ships on the east coast and are then spipped via train to a point where they can be off loaded closer to there final location, then the containers are put onto truck and transported to there final location. If there are containers full of track somewhere they are most Likely in New Jersey or some railroad yard.
