I've never noticed Corkscrew closed during the show. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've rode it during the show before. I know for a fact I've watched some of the show from Sky Ride, so I don't think they close either, unless this was something new that I didn't pay attention to last year. Ditto on the Giant Wheel.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you

I HAVE rode the Corkscrew at night, during the summer. Since that was about 3 years ago, I do not know if they close it now..

And, Mathew, Even though your post says that you dont know, Im just saying why I think it WILL close. None of us know, that is why theres a topic about this. If we knew, why would there be a post about it? *** Edited 12/17/2004 3:17:25 PM UTC by Nick McCormick***

Short answer: Probably not.

As you are all aware, Wicked Twister does not close and it would be in the path of the lasers. To allow it to be open a piece of masking, what we in the industry call Black Wrap (aluminum foil thats black) is placed in the path of the laser as a hard physical barrier between the laser and the ride. If you look in the doghouse below the screen where the effects laser comes out, you can see it in there. In fact this year the masking was such that Spiral could have remained open, however it was not budgeted to remain open so it closed.

Wildcat and Iron Dragon close because they are in the Pyro Fallout zone.

Dodgem closes due to light.

edit: CP&LE also closes due to pyro fallout.

Corkscrew only closed for the laser show when the park closed at the same time as the show began, like all other rides in the park. *** Edited 12/17/2004 5:35:39 PM UTC by LiveEJon***

I thought after I posted that might be a possibility. I remember seeing a documentary on TV somewhere for a rock concert where a rig on the stage had a barrier that prevented any beam from striking the arena lower than the back walls behind the top rows.

And now that I think about it, I think it was that doc where they mentioned the insurance they had to carry.

so this "barrier", it wont allow the laser to penetrate through it to strike a ride? im not clear on how its used?

Its like aluminum foil, a cheap, lightweight surface which won't allow the laser to pass through, and which will scatter the beam when it hits. Its black so that it blends in better and doesn't stand out like a sore thumb.

Well you're wrong. Lasers are formed (the type used for these shows, anyway) by stimulating gas in a tube with a mirror at one end a semi-reflective mirror at the other. As a result, all of the photons traveling parallel to the direction of the tube are emitted from the one end. That's so much light traveling in the same direction that it catches every little thing in the air, so it's visible (in space, contrary to sci-fi movies, you still wouldn't not be able to see it).

Jeff, you love using buzzwords don't you?

I can state for a fact that Sky Ride did not shut down during the laser show. Many times we would sing the songs on platform, all while still up and running. Corkscrew also ran.

The only rides to close due to the Laser Show were Wildcat, Iron Dragon, Space Spiral, and I think Dodgems.

I don't understand, why would a ride such as MaXair or Space Spiral, which will be/are behind the building where the lasers are projected, be closed? Do the lasers reflect of the screen or something like that?

Yes. Well sort of. The bottom of the screen is lined with mirrors, though by the time the main laser hits those and reflects back the danger is virtually gone. The laser that is a concern to passing aircraft and guests on rides is the effects laser which is located below the screen. Its used to create wave and other patterns in the fog/haze above the audience. It is this laser which is disabled if aircraft pass over head (in disregard to the FAA warnings that are issued) and is masked to prevent contact with guest areas, especially the "vertical" motion of rides towards the entrance of the park.

Space Spiral probably closes because of lower ridership during the nighttime hours. I usually don't bother to ride it unless someone else wants to. I'm sure the new ride will be open, they would pobably redirect the laser if needed.

Space Spiral has a sign posted right next to the entrance "This ride will close for the 10:00 Laser Light Show."

Power Tower and Corkscrew do not close for the Laser Light Show, because neither of our rides are in the path of the Lasers bouncing off the screen.

The only ones that do close, as stated above, are CP&LE, Iron Dragon, Wildcat, and Dodgems. No others close. *** Edited 12/21/2004 8:22:27 PM UTC by WaterDummy***
