I just have a dumb thought. Will MaXair have to close during the laser show like the space sprial does, Or is it far enought up that the laser will miss the ride? Just wondering
RIP MR.SCOTT The ONLY MAYOR OF LIGHTHOUSE
My guess is no but my reason is only my thoughts. I never noticed that space spiral wasn't open at that time. But I would guess that there aren't many riders at that time of the night so they close. Since most of the riders of space are family type, I don't picture them saying, at 10:30pm when the laser show ends, let's ride that. Plus there really isn't much to see at that time. MaXair is the new ride and will be the target for many around close. As most rides are, get in line by 11, and you get to ride as long as the ride is operational. It's the easiest way to waste time while the parking lot empties.
Space Spiral closes for the laser show so there is no chance of someone catching one of those powerful lasers in the eye. If you look at SS during a laser show, you can clearly see the green one hit it about 1/2 way up. Max air probably won't close cuz it doesn't get high up enough, but we won't know til it happens.

i always thought they closed the nearby ones (wildcat, iron dragon, mantis, CP&LE RR, only because they were close by and the noise and lights from the rides would interfer with the laser show. but my guess is they wont shut it down, i mean TTD and power tower are pretty close by to and they stay open.
I'm sure that they can change any lasers trajectory to avoid having to close down any rides. I bet ss is closed just because it probably doesn't get that many hits and it costs $ to have the ride running and an employee sticking their finger up their nose
No, it closes due to the laser show, do you want to get hit in the eye with one of those lasers? And they don't send an employeehome, they re-open it after the show is done.

Like i said before, i dont think it all has to do with projectory, why would they close down corkscrew, i think some of it has to do with the noise the coasters creat during the show. therefor they shut them down so it doesnt annoy those who watch the show. but on another note...i kinda think the laser show is getting old.
I have to agree with Mathew They do close down SS for the reason of the Lasers and WildCat/Iron Dragon and the train because they are located on the midway of the show. Thank You Mathew

Well, if your swinging up, what.. 140ft, and 1/2 of space spiral is around 160-165, dont you think theres a chance that your gonna get hit? I mean, you didnt know exactly for sure that it was half way up... *** Edited 12/16/2004 3:58:47 PM UTC by cedarpointlover***

Well you're wrong. Lasers are formed (the type used for these shows, anyway) by stimulating gas in a tube with a mirror at one end a semi-reflective mirror at the other. As a result, all of the photons traveling parallel to the direction of the tube are emitted from the one end. That's so much light traveling in the same direction that it catches every little thing in the air, so it's visible (in space, contrary to sci-fi movies, you still wouldn't not be able to see it).
This concentrated light will burn the back of your eyeball. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember talking to someone that worked on the Sea World show back in the day indicating that they needed special insurance to do the show, in case of an accident. Heck, I still get nervous about the laser vendors at IAAPA, pushing their beams across the entire show floor.
Two things weaken a beam with distance. The first is the stuff in the air, and the second is beam convergence. None of the photons traveling through that tube will be perfectly parallel to the tube, so that ridiculously slight angle they travel at will cause the beam to spread over distance. If you look at the beams that strike any of the buildings at CP (I seem to recall some hitting the Coliseum), they're a couple of feet in diameter.
As for the rides they close, anything that they worry would be in the path of the beams is closed. The beams terminate on the screen, or they are reflected up or, in the case of those shot from the screen, out toward Giant Wheel. Looking from above, the only things in the path of that sweep are the tops of the Coliseum, Giant Wheel, Wicked Twister, Space Spiral and Disaster Transport. I never understood why they closed Sky Ride because I don't think it's in those angles.
So the question is, does maXair reach the potential height? My guess is yes, but so does Wicked Twister, and I didn't think they closed that.

Jeff, on WT your back is to the screen though, I don't quite remember how visible the screen is as you go up the spikes, but I would imagine the threat of getting hit by a laser is extremely small (small enough to be ignored anyway).

not always true, you do turn in the air on WT! and jeff i understand what your saying, but i was just talkin about corkscrew, its not in its path the last corkscrew is a little bit before the midway where it bounces off as you said, i was just stating somethign that i was told before, the shut down some becuase of the noise and lighting they generate!
You are speaking for Jeff, airtime25? Wow! That's bold.
He may agree with your point, but I doubt it is appreciated that you post that he understands what was posted by others. Only he can make that claim, not you.
Then again, I could be wrong. :)

I don't ever remember Space Spiral operating at night, even many years before the laser show debuted.
