I don't think they ment it offensively....and I find it perfectly viable that they express their sexual orientation. If you're going to live with someone for three months or more, it's nice to have a few things in common. :)

LOL...I was thinking the same thing when I read it...very interesting way to introduce yourself. However, working at CP, it is a good thing to state. I moved into Commons last year and was hit on incessantly by a roommate, I had to move out...

Some people don't understand the meaning of "not interested," so stating it right from the start is your best bet. That goes for every orientation.

How is it insecure for a person to state that he's straight? How is that different from saying "I'm a male" or "I'm 21" or something like that?

Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with that either. Besides - I wonder, would anyone have called it "insecurity" if he had put "18 male gay" in his message? ;)
Not to mention that you're assuming something which might not be there... saying "18 male str8" doesn't mean the person is saying "I don't want gay roommates." It doesn't mean the person is insecure... it's just putting the information out there, and there's nothing so wrong with honesty, is there? :)

I don't think that would be weird either.

I think we'd all be in agreement that different races do sometimes lead different lifestyles...and I know we all get along real well at Cedar Point, but I don't think Terrell would want to deal with Cowboy Bob's Garth Brooks playing incessantly in their shared room.

This isn't meant to offend blacks OR rednecks with the stereotypical names, it's simply an example...Heck, I'm a bit of a redneck myself. However, stating anything about yourself isn't showing insecurity...just the opposite, actually. It shows you're secure in who you are, and that you want any potential roommates for the long summer to know exactly who they may be moving in with.
