Would you pay for the net?

I'm thinking of doing this as a service to all the CP'ers that are here but are either A) Waiting in line at the rec center or B) Paying a buck for 8 minutes on that SLOW terminal in the commons office...

I can get access to a high speed (DSL) connection and pay internet terminals and put them in at the mall. It wouldn't be cheap, but if Cedar Point employees would be highly interested in using something like that, I'd be totally willing to look into the investment.

I was thinking a quarter a minute, or maybe 4 bucks for 20 minutes for a volume discount. Not really looking to turn too much of a profit, just to break even and get a few extra bucks...but it would be for you guys, so what would you think about it?

how about getting a high speed connection and then setting up a network in the dorm and charge for that?

I've checked, you cannot get a DSL connection across the lines in the dorms because they are private lines and CP handles all the switching. Those kiosks are running a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a T1 connection. Data Chime, a local ISP, will set up some crudsy dial up in your room, though.

Read the terms and conditions of the sign-up if you do go this route. Most ISPs won't allow a connection over DSL to be resold. You may have to pony up for a T1 to bypass that.

I could use commercial DSL, one DSL line for four computers. For regular internet surfing and e-mail, splitting it four ways is still going to be faster than dialup on all four computers (I get around 400k/s constant on my DSL, and it would be from the same company, and they do allow resale of the time since they don't have a retail division that does the same thing I am considering) so about 100k/s constant.

Anyways, that network thing for commons is VERY conceivable, and I have 3 different options in mind...but I know that they'd never give it real consideration. I would be willing to work with them, though, to set up an 802.11b pay-network at Commons/Bayside though, if anyone who knows someone higher up in housing wants to let them know. There are viable options.

I'm open to suggestions: alanpugh@sbcglobal.net

If you can't get DSL or Cable out there (I think a T1 would be too expensive) you could always look into satellite. And as for a wireless network, they can be easily installed (easier than running a bunch of cat 5, IMHO), and access can be controlled through MACs. Also, I think that setting up a 'b' network has become extremely cheap now with the advent of the newer technologies of 'g' and 'a'. This would be really cool thing to have out there (I get pretty hyped about setting up networks everywhere).

b networks are extremely cheap. I set up desktop, laptop, and pocket pc all on 802.11b and spent under 200 bucks.

how would you be able to set up a high speed net connection over 802.11b in bayside you cant get cable modem or t1 or dsl into thoes dorms anyway so where would your connection come from. keep in mind also that satalight has reeeeeeaaaaaaaallllllllyyyyyyyyy slow uploads. sure you can download fast but uploads suck.

Setup a wireless network and rent out the devices and codes for access.

Or, you could have the wonderful folks at Cedar Point go into each room, and install 1 or 2 internet connections, run the wiring, and connect to their own T-1. But, if they did that, they would probably have to buy a t-1 for each building! It would be that hard to do.
