Work and School

I'm considering working/living at Cedar Point this summer, but I would also like to take a 3 credit-hour online class. Is this feasible?

Know this: the WiFi in the dorms/rec is crap. That being said, there is a McDonald's across the street that has WiFi, and there's also the Clean Scene and Panara Bread that has free Internet.

I do know people who have taken classes while working at the Point for the summer, and I do think it really depends on how motivated you are to get your school work done. Keep in mind, you'll be working 6 days a week about 10-12 hours per day, if you're in rides.

It's possible, but not easy. I tried it several years ago and ended up dropping the two classes I was taking. Between the difficulty in finding reliable wifi, and the desire to spend the summer with my new friends instead of slaving over some crap class I wasn't interested in, the decision to drop the classes was easy.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

I tried to take 2 classes for 6 credits in 2011 when I lived in the dorms. You will not be able to study inside the dorms unless you can study under noise and people coming in and out your door. I tried to take sociology and US Government but I ended dropping the Government Class.

Just realize you will be working full time, from over 8 hours to maybe even 13 hours just in ONE day. And you only get off One day a week unless you can talk into a international to have their day off or ask to trade shifts so you can get off earlier.

At night when everyone gets off work...there will be no peace and quiet. There will be loud drunk people in your hallway, possible in your room. Music blaring. And crew parties going on that you will want to go and friends that want you to hang out with them.

I wrote my papers every week when I did Laundry across from Target on my day off, because for my class just had like a 2 week paper due and 3 posts every week and the laundry-mat is dead during the day.

If you think you can do a class while working, go for it. I dont mean to mean and be harsh just for your one class you plan to take but I'm just writing this for other readers wondering of taking more classes for the summer.

Shew. Don't you hate it when you receive a slew of answers you didn't want to hear? ;)

The class I'm wanting to take is a 3-hour biology course. It's one of the most commonly taken online-summer courses, so I'm hoping that means it isn't too difficult.

I'm the kind of student who gets his work done no matter what--and I usually do it well. However, I'm also an incredibly social, fun-loving guy. So it sounds like I'm going to have to come up with some outstanding strategy to make this work the way I want it to.

How many weeks is this summer course? If you love working Split shifts as much as I did, you will have more than enough time to take this class. Split shifts (in rides at least) work like this: Say the park is open 10am-10pm. You go to your ride and work from open-1:30pm. You're off from 1:30pm-6pm. Then you come back and finish the shift from 6pm-close. I'm sure you can do the math, but that's 4.5 hours to get whatever paper, test, studying, etc. you need to get done. It's not impossible, but it might not be the easiest thing.

That would probably work well for me. Will I just need to talk about it with my supervisor?

... If you work with me, you're more then welcome to have any split that I get. I hate them.

But really, just talk to your TL/ATL, and they'll try to help you out. The availability of those shifts depend largely on staffing, so you'll see more of towards the end of June - beginning of July before people start leaving for school.

When staffing is tight, you'll see mostly O-8*, O-C and 11:30-C, only when you get to +1, +2, +3 people you'll start seeing O-6, 1:30-C, Splits and so on.

Aww splits are awesome! They give me time to do my laundry, take a nap, or play in the park.

I have worked in rides for 2 years, going back for a third. Possibility that I might me ATL; (but it's NOT 100%). However, if I get ATL, try to work on my ride, and I can try to schedule you some splits. Any questions, my cell is: (740) 680-3125. My e-mail address is: jp312210@ohio.edu
