Winter Chill Out Live Blog Discussion

I don't think Magnum will last DECADES more... Magnum may not be sinking that fast, but my friend did post a video showing that the footers out in the Pretzel loop are actually sinking about 1/2 an inch a year.

Absolutely CLASSIC... I haven't laughed that hard in a while!

Did they mention anything at WCO about the alleged fence/wall being installed after the dive loop on Valravn?

MDOmnis, I just wanted to respond to your comment. I know you said Magnum was the best to you, but I just wanted to say that I slightly give Steel Force the edge. Magnum is still a cool hyper coaster, but I give the kudos and upper hand to Steel Force at Dorney Park.

Met my son's mom on Magnum....It was a bumpy ride, just like our relationship, but hey I got a son out of the deal!

S&S Sansei (owners of the former Arrow Dynamics) has a new train available for old Arrow hypers. This is currently being used on Titan Max in Japan. Not a fan of the obnoxious head rests but I do like the open design and the T bars.

Improved trains would make a world of difference on Magnum. Let's hope Cedar Point installs this or something similar in the future.

If it were between those or the current Magnum trains, I'd say keep the current ones. Those new trains look hideous.

We always ride Magnum when we are at the park. It's probably the only ride we haven't skipped during a trip. It's close to the resort exit. It's a walk on at the time the park is closing or early in the morning. Which for my wife is a good thing. She has no patience and doesn't care to wait in lines. I don't see it going anywhere. It's high capacity and unlike anything else. It broke records. It's the 90's. It's not these ultra smooth rides that are built nowadays. Too worried that if your leg gets bruised a little from making the choice to ride it you might sue them. Can you imagine a ride getting built today with the bunny hills at the end like Magnum. Not a chance. I've rode Diamondback at KI. To me it's more comparable to MF. But not as good. I don't see how you can compare these new coasters to something like Magnum. I would like it if they put new trains on it though. Something more open, like MF.

It would be nice if they built a B&M Hyper coaster. Would decrease the lines on the other rides. I just don't get why the idea would revolve around taking a ride out. Why not leave Magnum there and build where STR was. Why do we always got to tear them down? there is plenty of space to build coasters without taking out the awesome collection of coasters they already have. I'm talking about Mean Streak too. They're clearing land for the next 2 or 3 major additions. And people still suggest that something has to come down? I don't get it.

Yeah I don't think new trains would make a difference anyhow. Magnum's trains are so iconic!

SIDEBAR: Is anyone else having trouble loading pages on pointbuzz? Some of the pages are taking forever to load.

Wolfbobs, those trains don't look too bad. If they had the same seat style as Millennium Force, then it would be even better. I get where some people are going with the train discussions here. The trains that are on Magnum's track now are iconic. So either way, if they changed it or not, I would still enjoy Magnum either way. To me if you change the trains now, then wouldn't Magnum lose it's ACE landmark status?

The ride these are on now had the exact same trains as Magnum uses. The park did a cool thing and let guests sign the train as a way to say goodbye.

Anyways, I'm not saying these trains should or shouldn't go on Magnum but I am a huge proponent of a change to those trains. I personally hate them. I hate the restraints, how closed in they are, how difficult it can be to get in and out of them.

Maybe even have Chance Morgan design new fiber glass bodies that are more open, easier to get in and out of and more comfortable lap bars. (I'll go hide now from all the Magnum fanatics!) ;-)

I don't think it would effect it's ACE landmark status. It's usually the coasters given the ACE Coaster Classic title that can be lost if the ride is altered (Bluestreak individual lap bars).

Here's a blog entry Tony once posted featuring a similar photo to one of Jason McClure's tweets of the lagoon:

Interesting to see if anything happens to that area of the park in the next year or so.

Interesting seeing the photos in that blog, Most of those photos reference things that have already happened. The ones that haven't changed are the pirate ride building and the mean streak. Could be a sign of things to come.

That may be the case, but just because a ride is unique doesn't mean that it is the best. B&M Hypers might seem redundant, but they're all packed with smooth airtime, something that Magnum doesn't have.

That is exactly why the B&M hypers are inferior to Magnum. I really enjoy the more violent and rough airtime on Magnum, something the B&M rides don't deliver. You may like smooth airtime but I find it dull compared to Magnum, which to me is a much more exciting ride.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,

Yes. ACE's Coaster Classic award has specific requirements -- no headrests, no individual lap bars and so on -- while the Landmark award recognizes historically significant coasters such as Magnum, The Beast, the original Batman the Ride at Great America and Swamp Fox.

I'm a Marxist, of the Groucho sort.

I'm going to be that guy, but personally, I don't really think Magnum is that great. The airtime until the bunny hops just isn't there. The restraints and trains are bad, and the bunny hops are fun, but so incredibly rough. I've had worse rides on Magnum than I have Mean Streak. The reason I like magnum better, though, is that it isn't so incredibly boring. (I'm going to go into hiding until the riots are over)

CP Top 5: 1) Steel Vengeance 2) Maverick 3) Magnum 4) Raptor 5) Millennium

I am not a fan of Magnum, and it is at the bottom of my priority list any time I go to the park. The ride itself is so rough and clunky. I don't think it operates as smoothly or efficiently as it used to in the past. I feel like new trains would make a world of a difference. Hopefully they can fix that awful chain lift sound while they're at it. The one thing I always loved about Magnum was the big open station and the shady queue.

I think the lift chain sound is classic. It shows that a ride doesn't have to be modern in order to be an icon.

However, I will agree that I don't always see the excitement of Magnum as I'm trying to prevent my legs from being bruised by those horrible lap bars. After the pretzel turn, I start to get nervous for what is about to come.
