Why not build a parking deck?

I was thinking about this earlier today. Since CP is clearly running out of space to build new attractions, why not invest in building a parking deck? Do you think this is a possibility in the near future?

oh boy, here we go again... they are CLEARLY running out of space? im too lazy to find it, but someone has to have that thread just like this that was posted before 94 when rapter was built.

If you read any of the previous parking garage threads you would have found out that the cost of building said structure can run from $10,000-$30,000 per parking spot. And, CP is not running out of room.

99er posted, and I agree a Hotel Breakers parking garage would free up much needed space by Breakers. Doesn't really matter I don't think CP will ever build a parking garage of any kind.

Cedar Point is not running out of room, this has been discussed many times. It is not a good idea money wise and the problems it would cause. Besides, you think Disaster Transport is an eye sore? Let's see how a concrete parking garage looks as you enter the peninsula.

Not to mention how much hell it would be to get out of that thing at the end of the night with all of the traffic. (Especially on Saturdays O.O)

Universal Orlando is pretty easy to get out of.

It would also look terrible. It's an amusement park, not a stadium. I think you would be better buying land further down the road and having a tram.

This will probably never happen, but it would be really cool if they had a monorail that could take you down the causeway and to the main gate. We can dream can't we? :)

Was this really already a post from 94? My family didn't even own a computer, let alone I even knew CP existed then! Sorry, but I have only been a memeber of Pointbuzz for only 4 years.

Actually, this topic comes up time and time again.

Yep. The first two replies after that post are from two guys who are still active here on PointBuzz today. I suspect they're really old now. :)

I was in the midst of college then, right about the time dorm rooms were wired for "high speed" network access. It was mind-blowing not to have to dial-in with a modem for access.

Now, put that 5 1/4-inch floppy disk down and get off my lawn! :)

I must say, Universal's parking system in Orlando is amazing. I mean, they turned relatively limited space into a huge capacity parking area. With a system like that, I am sure Cedar Point can literally gain half of the real-estate back with a deck system.

Space wise though, Cedar Point has plenty. If they ever did run low on land, just look at Hershey... Check out the SkyRush, Great Bear, SDL midway... Nothing a little surveying and creativity can't fix.

I've heard that a parking garage can cost anywhere from $4000/space up to $15,000 per space.

Let's assume $10,000 a space just for math ease. Now, I don't know how many parking spaces there are in the CP lot but you have to figure there are a bunch. So, I know that Disney Studios in Florida has 6500 parking spaces. I'll use that number...just because.

So, if CP were to build a garage to hold 6500 cars you would be looking at $65 million, right? (Even using the low construction figures it would be in the ballpark of $25 million. That is a pretty good chunk of change. They can do an awful lot for $65 million.

What Universal got out of the deal was the ability to build a second gated theme park, several hotel resorts and a nighttime entertainment district. All of which, by the way, lead to a significant increase in potential revenue. CP would do what? Expand the park? Not sure the payoff is even remote for something of that expense.

I think the problem isnt space itself... but its using space while maintaining the atmosphere. CP is large open and green... the more coasters they buildthe more trees are taken out and water features... the scenery etc. Then all thats left is steel and pavement.

Befote dragster paddlewheel excursionsand iron dragon were great... now theres less and less of that feeling of being in a remote nature location. Taking out the parking lot and expanding with the oark in that direction could prevent this

I thought the last trees were removed sometime in 2007.

Not exactly. Guide to The Point opened in 1998.
