Where are all the hours at?

CaptainChris's avatar

Because mine have all gone to hell. You would think that someone somewhere in the park would need a hard worker like me. Park attendence better pickup after the 4th or I am screwed. With that said, does anyone know of free and cheap things to do in town and yes I have a car.

Did the foreigners come in much later this season and knock off a bunch of hours or something? Because I've been hearing the hours are out of control in the opposite way - people working multiple O-C's per week already and I'm thinking to myself if it's that bad now, there will be no one left by the end of July!

Yeah, how are you unable to get hours?

CaptainChris's avatar

Park attendence being down is effecting our hours big time at our location plus we keep getting a new person just about everytime I turn around it seems. Plus the extra hours number is screwed up today. What department are you hearing is O-C ing because that used to be me?

^Everyone I know in rides has been complaining of working O-C many days in a row for weeks now.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

I can see how the ride hosts are over worked. I do'nt think I would have a problem being a temp ride host depending on the ride, but I do'nt think that they would be all that willing to allow a food host to become a ride host just like that. Oh well.

I was down there for a week to see my now ex gf and she worked an O-C every day, and I didn't get to see her much.

Others I know have been O-C'ing a lot as well.

Its like that in food services too. My hours are lower now, I went from having 9 hour days to 5 hour days.

Yeah my hours have been getting cut a lot, its been stressing me out, well kinda. Its because theres too many people in my department, and they went way over the number of hours that they should have. So now I'm getting 7 or less hours a day, and keep getting sent home early.

Attendance is down yet again? I thought the park was off to a pretty good start early on. The weather has been unbearably hot in Michigan, but it has cooled off now so I bet it will be packed this weekend.

When I worked there, the attendance really jumped after the fourth of July. July and the first two weeks of August really make or break the attendance numbers I think.

I hear you Ryan. What location are you at?

Hey Captain Chris, I'm not sure where you work in foods but hours most of the time can be found if you look for them. On slow days many locations close early or don't open at all. I'm sure you know that.

I would suggest ask your area sup about spinning cotton candy. While it's not the most fun thing to do, plenty of hours are always available.

Next, don't ever say no when asked to goto another location. This is a quick way to know more stuff and meet more people. The more you know, the more you can do. After a short while you will build a rep as a hard worker and will get requested by sup's who know your looking for work.

Hang in there, school just got out so the park should be at peak staffing. It doesn't last. The heat gets the best of some, some get home sick, take vacations (already contracted), many get fired or quit. Then by mid July you will never go home, will get called on your day off etc...

Since you have a car, cheap food can always be found. I'm not sure if your 21, but stay away from the bars (something I wasn't good at!) and money should be ok.

^ I echo that...about mid-July people start getting the "I got this job down-pat attitude" and start slacking off on their responsibilities. This will get you fired real fast. Hours will definitely pick up in mid-July and stay that way right through the end of the season.

I know when I worked there, employees would post notes next to the schedule seeking/giving up up hours. Perhaps you could try this approach.

When I worked in Racepark, we had an employee cross-trained for the pet farm. He ended up working 70 weeks between the two jobs. Check in to this possibility also.

The hours are there if you want them. You just need to know where and how to find them.

I'm too sexy for my harness!

Dial "6663" from any employee phone and you'll get the extra hours hotline telling you whatever department has them available that week. It's updated frequently.

The extra hours number stopped working days ago All Wet. I will say this. My hours have gone back up a bit plus they are more stable as I do not think they will chage it around much this week. And about the cotton candy spinners. You want to know where they all spin it at. Thats right, My location, CJ's Provisions/Toot Sweets. There is always some random and international person or 2 standing there spinning all day long. Ironically I have only spun for less then 30 minutes total. They rely on me to do the grunt work for the stand. Any thing that requires hard work I am there. The good news is that my supers sweet talked the auditors to lift my cash handling ban so yesterday was my first day back on register for over a month now. I still screwed up my count at the end of the night and still went over by more then I really thought I would. I think its a conspiricy or the CJs ghosts are messing with me.

If you want your cash drawer to come out close to even, what you do is always double count the money you take, enter the amount exactly in the register, and then always double count what you give back to the customer. This system has always worked very well for me.

man cedar point was the place to get hours in 04. For the low pay I made damn good money because of the hours I worked. Housekeeping at the Breakers seems to offer hours a lot.

"Mean Streak crew 2004"

Yeh I remember back to the 04 days too. Hours were everywhere back then if you wanted them. Of course the park was busier that it has been the past two summers also. :-/

Wow...times have changed for sure!

Before I entered the glorious world of Live Shows where I had an awesome schedule, I worked in Housing for 2 years and Games my 1st year.

There were weeks where I should've literally brought my pajamas to work because I was doing open to closes for 3 or 4 weeks straight. I remember working during the "dog days of August" in Games when it was 100 degrees or more outside...being at work by 8 or 9am and staying 'til well after 11pm or midnight. I absolutely detested these weeks and thought it was slave labor...despite the rather fat paychecks that I spent carelessly at Sandusky Mall and the local bars.

I know that in my current jobs, they have both switched to the ACES computerized scheduling program which has its problems definitely---but it also is pretty in-depth and precise, down to the most minute detail. Something to perhaps look into?

I hope to work at Cedar Point when I get older. I will sure never complain about going to work that's for sure!!
