It looks to me like routine maintenance. I beleive CP hires a company to inspect every coaster. They look over all the track for structural integrity mainly to make sure winter air especially hasn't cracked the steel as it sat unused. I seem to recall them driving a crane around the park. I wouldn't sweat it. Should be nothing major with the Twister. Probably just a little easier to look at on the ground. Or maybe they did find a problem and it is just easier to fix on the ground. To me the downed spike is just a sign of proactive safety in progress.
As for a footer next to the spike... The only thing I see is the people carrier they attach to the crane as can be seen in the Millennium Puzzle in the online games at CP.com.
As for the island, it is as I mentioned here in the Finally another Blog Thread a new state of the art restroom facility with 1000 stalls in which you swim to through a now Piranha choked lagoon.

I'm with ya on the maintenance issue. I've heard many times that WT has problems with breaks in welds on the track. Guess the piece we see in the picture is the piece in question.
As for the footer, I don't see anything. But I do notice the amount of queue they had to remove to get the crane in. I personally hope they don't put back the amount of queue they removed since I've never seen it filled (though I'm sure Halloweekend Saturdays are the exception). But that's just me.:)

I do not think CP will tear down SRF. I do not have a clue as to what the land clearing is for. Maybe we are finally getting a ride on Millenium Island. Does not look like anything major though. But that does not mean that the footprint will not expand.

Here is my detailed thoughts on that land clearing. At first honestly I did not see it, but now I see it. A lot of it. I think it definitely ties into Terror island.
I think Terror Island was just a test of logistics. Obvious logistics at that like walking from Magnum to Mantis without walking all the way around. They obviously have been using bridges to the island for years. I believe Terror island was a test to see how well suited and receptive the public was to the island as well as adjusting the Halloween attractions.
Looking at that clearing and seeing how it severely eats away at the theming for Paddlewheel either we are seeing a severe overhaul of Paddlewheel or the removal of the Excursions altogether. Much to my dismay I am guessing at the latter.
Notice I have avoided the terms new coaster. I don't think this is for a coaster. I think this will be a new AREA for the park that will allow CP to continue to use this area as a Halloween attraction as well. I can't help but notice the more centralization of the walk through haunts last season.
Think about it, make a new area on the island and build bridges. Not only do you solve logistics and complaints of why do I have to go back there or up there to get over there. When now the person can just walk across. As well as a new area on the island can open up the Trail for Halloweekends and allow people who would normally avoid the attractions to finally have a choice in which way they walk. As much as we all would like to say don't visit if you don't want to be spooked, people will visit anyways, and CP must make them happy with walking options ;)
At the same time..... Speaking of the Trail... If this is indeed for a new area of the park, then I think the demise of the Trail will be shortly followed (in a 10 year time frame). I could be wrong, this could be a coaster or other single ride that starts on the mainland, but where would you plug in the station at with out removing any existing rides and for preservation of the trail?????

Out of curiosity, what camera did you use? I would guess it was likely an SLR.
Oh, good pics, by the way.
I highly doubt that the land clearing is just for Halloweekends...that's a pretty permanent way to go, especially eating into the Paddlewheel area...while I'm sure TI is here to stay, I think the land clearing is for some other purpose...remember that 90% of the Halloweekends attractions are only temporary in their use of land and space at the park, and, since TI is an outdoor attraction anyways, logistics doesn't seem to warrant that much land clearing just to solve a little confusion..

mk522 if you look at my previous post again closely you will notice my thoughts are not confined to Halloweekends. ;) They were specifically a new area of the park that benefits Halloweekends. The designed wouldn't be for the Halloween attractions, it would benefit them. Imagine a great area for the summer, then for hallowwen, tyhe "Island of H**L" except a family friendly name.

^Also T&T specifically mentioned that Paddlewheel will be coming back this year so I doubt it will be gone for 2009, after that you might be right. Or T&T could be lieing, but in the past if they make a firm statement its always been right.

Surprisingly its not an SLR. It's a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS

What about the possibility of removing CCMR... just a thought. i just see that ride being removed before SRF
You do? I could see SRF leaving before Cedar Creek. Especially if a new ride that is installed is a new flume. And that is basically what I see happening.
well whatever happens, this will be a good season for sure! these speculation years are always fun :)
Sweet CP is finally getting that Aquatrax we have been hearing about! I heard its going to be taller then HW's new flume, and its going to bunny hop over SRF's turnaround and the midway to land in the old swan lake, then were going to have an underwater tunnel that will transport the ride out onto Lake Erie where it will go up another lift and have it's coaster segment out on the Lake, its going to be so super fantastic.
But seriously, guys dont tell anyone, the Lemon Chill Guy told me he might be fired if this information was leaked and his name was attached (whoops ;))
I don't like getting caught up in speculation this early (it's only two days old!) but I just have say one thing. I still don't get why some people think a new flume is coming to the Point. I mean, count me in as a big fan of White Water Landing and Mill Race, but really, water rides are only good for 2 or 3 months out of the season. And it seems like Cedar Fair isn't big on older versions of flume rides anyhow. Apparently, log rides are just lawsuits waiting to happen in Cedar Fairs eyes. Plus, I just don't see a "newer" version, like Holiday World's, in the works for Cedar Point. Why would they tear down Snake River Falls and build the exact same ride? I think if they do anything water related, it'd be with Soak City.
Just something I've been thinking since White Water Landing disappeared...
