I'll be fying into Cleveland with my daughter and need to get to the Breakers. Is there a standard procedure? What do most people do? Do I really need to rent a car just to get me to the hotel and back? It will just sit in the parking lot for three days.

It's about an hour drive from Cleveland to Sandusky. I believe some of the cab companies will drive between the two, but you'd have to call and get quotes.
The other option would be to take a greyhound from Cleveland to Sandusky and then a cab from there to the hotel.

You might want that rental car to go eat somewhere outside of the cedar point bubble during your stay. Cedar point only has so many food options (most on the unhealty and overpriced end of the spectrum) and you might be ready for a break from the crowds at some point during your stay.

you may be better off getting a rental car. if you are a AAA member there are some good discounts for Hertz car rental services. also, make sure you have cash as the fastest and most direct way to CP from Cleveland-Hopkins is the turnpike. just google "ohio turnpike rates" and it can tell you how much you will be charged.
and even if the car is sitting in the parking lot for three days, you could definitely leave the park to get food and what not.

2013 - Corkscrew
Greyhound ($99 + taxi)
- Approximately $45/person, round-trip
- 3 buses per day, Cleveland to Sandusky
- Rapid transit ($4.50/person, round-trip) from airport to Cleveland, then transfer to Greyhound station
- Taxi from Sandusky station to Cedar Point (no idea what that costs)
Amtrak ($61 + taxi)
- Approximately $26/person, round-trip
- 2 trains overnight (both leave Cleveland between 3am and 4am)
- Rapid transit ($4.50/person, round-trip) from airport to Cleveland, then transfer to Greyhound station
- Taxi from Sandusky station to Cedar Point
Car Rental ($165)
- Let's say $30/day @ 4 days, which is pretty generous
- Total, with taxes and fees, $153
- $12 for gas
Town car service ($207)
- $90 each way, plus gratuity
I would avoid Greyhound and Amtrak like the plague. It's terribly inconvenient from CLE and you're stuck with limited schedules. Plus, as you can see, there isn't an enormous cost savings. I'd probably go with the car rental personally, but if you're sure you don't want a vehicle, then a car service might be worth the money. They'll meet you at baggage claim and take you right to the hotel.
