what were you doing 20 years ago today?

20 years ago today the Magnum XL-200 opened to the world. How many of you went opening day that year. I sure did not as I was suffering from a huge sinus headache that made me so sick. I remember I even called off work which I rarely do but even that Monday morning I rused to the local Dairy Mart near my house to buy the USA Today to read the coverage of the ride which was the lead story of the Life section. I still have it in storage.

I did finally ride it on June 2 as part of Coastermania and it was instantly my favorite and I have ridden it more than any other amusement ride for pleasure. I probably have ridden the Space Spiral more as I was on that crew for three years but that was work. One time I actually did get to test ride the Magnum while being on the clock.

I hope the Magnum has many many for birthdays and I am sure it will.

I was pooping in a diaper. Wait, actually probably getting potty trained....

I was in grade 8 and I thought Canada's Wonderland was the best park ever. I had never been to another park.

I see Cedar Point opened earlier in the year 20 years ago, now we must wait another week ...

I'm going out to get some air.

I was just about to work my first and only summer at CP. If I only knew how much my life would change over the next 3 months.

I rode Magnum hundreds of times that summer and spent every off day watching the dolphins at Oceana. Wow - was it really 20 years ago?

I was busy dropping out of the University of Akron my first time around, and was in fact only five days away from beginning to date my future wife.

I was not there at opening, but I did go in June. We went camping there every year and that year I was amazed!! I was 15 years old and all I remember is just standing there for what seemed to be hours (20 min.) just looking up and up and up!! To this day I don't think I was ever so awed by anything like I was the first time I saw that!! ( well watching a couple kids being born was more inspiring, but that almost came to fainting)

I was at CP that week. I was in the seventh grade. I remember this was before we ran to the newest rides. I remember being on a ride in the front of the park and when in the air looking toward the Magnum and being scared. Then it was the only thing sticking up really. I remember riding it before they installed padding on the restraints.. Ouch to our legs as we rode it at least 8 times that day. The park was not that busy and my Mom was just amazing to take us instead of school that day. No lines is how she liked it.... I also remember, strobe lights, sound effects, and theming that actually worked every time. Why is CP so bad at that? Keep the theming alive CP? that is your only flaw in my eyes.. KEEP the theming alive!

At age 12 I was trying to enjoy my last days as a 6th grader because the next year I was headed to the middle school.

I did however enjoy Magnum that summer and was completely terrified. Who am I kidding, I still get scared. ;)

I was there on opening day and was completely blown away by how good the ride was. I also remember making my girlfriend at the time very mad because I blew off her birthday to go to CP with a buddy to ride Magnum.

I returned to CP later that week after calling in sick. A local Cleveland TV news crew was on the Magnum platform filming trains and riders and I remember having to stand towards the back of the station until they finished. I didn't want to risk being on local TV enjoying Magnum and possibly showing my boss the nature of my "illness".

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

I was in grade 10 I think, and went the day after. It was the after-prom outing for my school, and I hung out with upperclassmen friends. I remember my first ride pretty well. I was not a coaster dork then, and had I not been peer-pressured into riding, I might not have.
