I was told that I could start on Sunday the 11th so I went to the park Friday to process in. After waiting in line for 45 mins I was told that I had to start work within 24 hours of processing in. Not knowing this and being unable to go back to the park on Saturday I was forced to go play in the park and enjoy the JCC ERT.
Day 1 Sunday May 12: Sunday morning I was at the HR office promptly at 8am to process in. 15 minutes later I had my first Cedar Point employee ID in my hand. I ran over to wardrobe and got new spiffy uniform, blues and rain suit. I then went over to Park OP and take care of business over there. It was around 10:00 and I was told to come back around 3:00 for my orientation. On a normal day it would be no big deal to play in the park for 5 hours, but due to 45mph + winds nearly every ride was down.
The sky was blue enough to take pictures so I went back to the car and grabbed my D100. I shot about 100 pics, mainly of Mantis and TTD because they were the only two major rides running. I was a little upset because I was taking pictures of Mantis, and I asked the girl at entrance if I could enter the freeway line and take a few pictures. She said it was no problem, I mainly stayed around the base of the dive loop and after about 15mins I was told I had to leave the line. Now I wasn’t planning on riding, I didn’t hop on or under any queue rails, so I was pretty upset when I was told I had to leave when I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I didn’t argue with the op and I just exited the queue.
I got a solo ride on PWE and after that I put the camera back in the car and headed over to Park Op for my orientation. After watching some dated IAAPA safety videos I filled out some more paperwork and then I went home.
Day 2 Monday May 12: I got to Magnum around 8am, and the wind was just as bad as the day before. After 2 hours of training on the ride ( not that I needed it, but we had to make it official) I was told we were going to be on call just in case the winds died down and we could go back up. Well this was just peachy for me because I didn’t have any housing so I spent most of the afternoon in my car at Battery Park. Around 2pm we were called back to the ride but the wind was just teasing us. After 5pm we were told we were free and not on call so I made the trek back to Streetsboro.
Day 3 Tuesday May 13: I got to the ride around 8:30 hoping to get my lift walk. I was told that we couldn’t do it because we had to get up and running for Joe Cool. My first day working the ride was tough. Maria was in the park all day and was bored after being there for only two hours. I worked every position but speils and controls. I found the job to be tedious, repetitive, and demanding. (I’m not complaining because it is what I expected, then again very few rides have the intervals that Magnum has.) I was extremely tired at the end of the day and I was never so happy to see the last train of the night. I think mentally I would have been ok if I would have gotten a test ride in the morning. J All in all the first day actually working the ride was rough, I knew after I got used to the hours and break schedule I would be ok.
