Resistance is futile.

Nobody here has hard data, but we can make inferences.
As Kevinj notes, it's a reasonable assumption that Cedar Point doesn't have a hotel open on these Sunday nights because they don't see the potential for sufficient revenue. That you've had some experiences with Kalahari, a destination waterpark resort, being very busy on such Sunday nights doesn't necessarily mean that an isolated hotel offering limited amenities will enjoy the same level of business.

...does Cedar Point really just say "Eh...Kalahari has this covered, we're good."?
I don't think so. I think Cedar Point is more likely saying "wish we could get some of that sweet Kalahari coin, but the numbers just aren't there for us."

How do they know it's 5% or 55%?
Because like any well-run business (and Cedar Fair certainly seems to be a well-run business), they're always exploring potential business opportunities.

I bet the other area hotels have Sunday checkout data enough for the market to fully understand how many rooms are needed on Sunday evening. If hotels at the end of the causeway have 80% vacancy, I bet CP doesn't feel pressured to open hotels for the limited number of guests that might possibly stay one more night.
You could always call around to get an idea from the hotels in the area.
Noggin, I rotate my shield frequency, we will not assimilate.
Maverick, you're comparing some dingy $80-$125 a night hotels off point against $345-$625 a night rooms. The only hotels comparable that are within a convenient distance are Kalahari and Great Wolf/Bear/Cthulu or whatever it's called and I've already mentioned how I've called for booking that includes Sunday night when the park is closed the next day and there was no room at the inn.
I think that's what bothers me the most. There is no way CF compares their up level hotels to the Econolodge and Rain water park/hotel/hair care/tire center there on the corner of the causeway.
Why wouldn't they? If I ran the hotels, I'd compare numbers from every accommodation in the city.
Kalahari is a different matter entirely. They are their own attraction. CP hotels are just rooms close to the park.
Okay, for this....

Kalahari and Great Wolf are destination resorts in their own right. At risk of causing apoplexy amongst enthusiasts, it's likely there are often people staying at those Sandusky resorts who don't go to Cedar Point.
Saying that a full-on resort that's busy on these Sunday nights means that a hotel offering limited services to a small number of guests on an isolated peninsula would enjoy equivalent occupancy rates -- for one thing, it seems unlikely there would be enough people staying on Point to justify opening a restaurant, meaning that those guests would have to drive a fair distance to get dinner or breakfast or what have you -- that's just not something I can buy into.

I work at Blue Man in Chicago. Is our show on the scale of Hamilton, Book of Mormon or Hedwig and the Angry Inch? No. Are we constantly monitoring the other theaters and shows in Chicago? Yes.
Cedar Fair isn't comparing their hotels to the Econolodges and Days Inns, but I'd bet money* they're monitoring occupancy rates.
*And I'm so cheap I've bought clearance sushi at Walgreens.

Prawo- I give you an A+ for effort and well thought posts with logical points and observations.
I hope Everyone going to the park this weekend enjoys themselves. I also hope all the Moms have a nice Mother's Day, I guess all the moms employed at the CP Resorts will have a nice day off 😉
