Why would they build footers with extra concrete, and then backfill to a level grade? Just to spend some extra money?

To make them stronger ... duh! Do you really believe that the footers on all their other coasters are just a couple of feet deep?

No, I understand the concept quite well. What I am asking is why would two footers that are quite close together have significantly different base heights?
And, no, its very unlikely that its a soil issue.

Oh, okay.
There could be lots of reasons for that. Water table, differing forces of the ride subjected at those two specific points and/or even different uses of footers at that point, i.e.: one more for structural support and/or multiple use (station, lift mechanisms, etc.) and the other merely for ride elements and/or more than one support joined together at that specific point.

Speaking of footer depth, I don't think I've ever heard just how deep Dragster's footers go.

I'd have to agree with Dj that it looks as if those footers will be submerged. Looks like it's time to find those pictures of the swan boat pond drained and the footers in it a few days before the season.

None of the rides at CP have a very deep foundation. The foundations are very wide and act as a large base. That's why you see a small footer, with a large square block below the dirt in some of the pictures. TTD's tower is the same way, but much larger.

I actually find it interesting that they're poured new concrete in the base of the old "river" from WWL. That's not part of any footing because those are all poured in forms.

anybody know how many footers are there? i know that there alot. i also know tha this would be hard to find out or count. i was just curious.

Actually, yesterday morning, I saw two full dump trucks of dirt driving off the penninsula...
And another bobcat being unloaded from the back of a flatbed.
Thought I would also note that the newer trench near the WWL station was having the gravelly stuff they put under the footers poured into it later in the day.
It takes a lot of footers to support a 500 foot tall rotating restaurant. Geeze.
The width or the footers also relates to the soil type as Cedar Point is basically sand and needs additional width on the footers to keep them from moving. (or sinking.......no more said)

I saw the supports too. Friday night from the train. Quite a few short supports, plus one noticeably longer. Plus a crane similar to the one at the staging area, with the outriggers extended. All were near the tracks in a group.
