turnpike or route 2?

Which way is faster coming from michigan near detroit? I'm telling my friends that route 2 is faster i just need some back up on this subject. Even though you can go fast on the turn pike route 2 is shorter.

I've driven them both, and found Rt 2 to be a tad longer than turnpike (provided you're going up Ohio 4 and not US 250). On Rt 2, you can get stuck behind a slowpoke or two without a good opportunity to pass for a while. On the turnpike, construction zones provide the same opprotunity.

With the Ohio 4/Ohio 2 bridge closed, I'm debating whether I should take turnpike to US 6, or Ohio 2. I'm thinking that the latter will be preferable.

I've always preferred 2 myself, and get off on 6. It's a bit of a wrangle through town, but the extra 10 minutes never bothers me.

I guess I'm just lucky as I rarely get behind someone who is doing less than the speed limit on the relatively short section that is only two lanes. The speed limit is 55, and most times traffic travels around 60.

Then again, I know what bastards the Ohio cops are, especially toward Michigan drivers, so even if I have no one in front of me, I keep my speed down.

It's a toss up between the Turnpike and 2.

They both end up taking about the same time. 2 is teh nicer drive though IMO and I liek to take it on occasion. But by all means get off on 6 as you really save some time.

In fact if you do take the turnpike get off at Fremont and go the mile or so south to 6 You save a lot of time when compared to going all the way to 4.

I was hoping to make that timing comparison, but there was some Major Accident on 475 forcing a brief surface street detour, so I didn't get a chance to see how the 6->freemont route compared to the Ohio-4 route. I guess we'll see on Saturday...

I'm in the same boat at Brian Noble with the bridge on Rt. 4 being closed. I've always taken the Turnpike, mainly because it tends to be a safer drive than Rt. 2, and I have a tradition of stopping at the Burger King in the Turnpike Plaza for breakfast. This year I'm seriously reconsidering my route though. I drove Rt. 2 out to get my seson pass picture last Saturday and it was about 10-15 minutes faster than the turnpike. It's also shorter in terms of mileage, and with the absurd gas prices I see that as a plus. Plus Rt. 2 will save me $3.10 in Turnpike fees every time I go to the park. That adds up to quite a bit of money over the course of the season.

thanks for your opinion because now i can go rub it in my friends face that route 2 is better is all ways thank you for responding.
BigMillyStyle - The quickest way from the Detroit region (depending on exactly where you're at) is to take I-275 south to I-75 south to 280 south to the Ohio turnpike (East). 280 is under construction as it has been forever, however don't let it scare you. Traffic still routes through the region at a good pace and the construction is only for a couple of miles. I go this way from I-94 and from there on a good day I can do it in about 1.5 hours.

yea thats what i do is take from 275 to 75 and 280 south but route 2 seems to be quiker and less miles and gas and you don't have to pay the toll.

I'm cheap, so I always take 2. I took the turnpike home from Sandusky the other night, and it dragged on and on... Plus, the McDonalds on Navarre in Oregon and I have grown to like each other.. hehe

I live in Mount Pleasant and Detroit (in summer) and prefer 2. It is very fast and I rarely get caught behind a truck. Plus it's a nice drive and it's free!

However, at night I prefer the turnpike just because two lane country roads like 2 just don't seem safe in the dark.

Turnpike to 53? I believe. Then 2 to 6. You can avoid the traffic on 250 this way. You end up at the causeway right there between the 2 employee dorms. All you need to do is turn left and avoid all the jam with the exeption of the lines at the tollbooths.

You know, I've never ever run into traffic problems on 250 going into Cedar Point. Traffic is always moving, and isnt that heavy, what times are you guys hitting traffic back-ups on 250?
i like the turnpike coming from kzoo to cedar point (i have made the trip in 2.5 hours), the 3 lanes (while it lasts) is so nice, you never can behind any slow grandmas driving.
Everytime I try the turnpike I run into at least 3 cops between 23 (Toledo) and 250 (Sandusky). 'They love to sit right between the concrete wall on the U turns for "authorized vehicles only". Pisses me off because the Ohio turnpike is really built for higher speeds than the Michigan expressways. However the turnpike is much straighter and has 3 lanes just about the entire distance from Toledo and Sandusky. I must be just complaining a little too much. In MI we can ho 75-85 and not get pulled over. Get into OH and we get nailed for 70 in a 65!!!!

Not bitter or anything. I just don't understand.

My point? RT 2 seems to have fewer Ohio Troopers. Watch out though if you get off at 6. There is a Highway patrol station right after the old Steuks on the left. I believe it goes down to a rediculous 35 mph there. I don't have an issue with speed or anything. Just seems that when there are more lanes and there is restircted access like a turnpike, OH would be a little more considerate on the speed limits.

If the traffic on the Ohio Turnpike is moving together at higher speeds you are OK. I've done 80 mph all the way across, seen the OHP and never been pulled over. When you start flying in and out of lanes is when you get into trouble. Remember, just go with the traffic, it'll usually be moving pretty good.

cyberdman, if you can make it to CP in 1.5 hours from the I-94/I-275 interchange, you are DEFINITELY going beyond the speed limit!

Like bholcomb, I also have a fondness for the McD's in Oregon, as you discovered last year when we met for the first time there.

* see a fellow in a red wings jersey and say* "um, bhocomb?"

That McD's is the halfway point for me, and a perfect place for a pitstop both on the way to and from CP.

So eventhough 280 is under nasty construction the Rte. 2(Oregon) exit is still open? Every year I'm a bit apprehensive as the construction seems to get more intense...

:) I never said I wasn't. :) You definately have to keep your eyes peeled though.

I'm a route 2 taker. It seems like the simpler drive for me. It's also more scenic. I live in Port Huron (1 hr N of Detroit) and I usually clock in right around three hours.
