I personally think it's a lame idea to add a drop tower on KK. Six flags obviously has to compensate for their inferior copycat coaster.
May The Millennium Force Be With You!
I just read that the drop tower is "nestled" inside Kingda Ka, but that it "replaces" a 35 year old wooden coaster. ??? I'm not familiar with the park but unless there was a 35 year old coaster nestled within Kingda Ka how is that possible?
I would love a drop tower attached to TTD. The true freefall would be so much better than PT. Maybe they could switch over PT drop side to just launching. I'm not sure if that's possible though. They probably use different parts. If they did put a drop tower, they would have to sell it to the GP so they know its different that PT though. Maybe have the 2 outer ones face down like at Busch Gardens, and maybe have a middle one be an observation one, that just slowly moves up and down, all enclosed.
The only problem I could see is space for the queue. Other than that the structure is already there lol!
For those interested in what this might look like..

I think adding a drop tower would ruin TTD's look, and anyway the point would never stoop so low as to copy SF doing it with KK
Well to add one to TTD still wouldn't beat six flag's version Zumanjaro . Yes it makes 2 rides out of one, but, is this something CP would want to do? This may bring back the coaster war back into place, then it may not. A 500 ft coaster needs to be something more than TTD style. Gatekeeper is a great addition this yr but, KI is getting some pretty impressive coaster's the last few yr's. A new woodie to capture the height king would also be cool. 2015 looks like maybe the next coaster to CP, maybe maybe not. Maybe even a yr that new paint and fixen rides should be like the NEW Look CP. Whatever CP does, I will be a supporter of to remain #1.
I'm actually wondering now if using the structure of the coaster to support another ride would be that great of an idea. The forces of the two rides may be playing against each other and cause structural issues. I know they have engineers working on this who should know more than me but maybe it's better to let Kingda Ka be the guinea pig and let Dragster be.
The only things that would need to be modified is the PLC. The only modification on the tower I'm not sure about is for the dump valves on the opposite end might need adjusted and a new set of mufflers put there, but it could do it if the PLC allowed it, it just might be a bit...louder than it already is :)

Standing in line for Magnum and watching TTD go over the top, you can see just how much the tower sways. I would think that adding a drop ride to it would make the tower more rigid and I doubt that Intamin designed them for some future use outside of supporting the original ride.
It just seems kind of gimicky and way to low of capacity for CP to consider. Leave that weird goofy stuff for SF they seem pretty good at it.
My biggest issue with a drop tower on TTD, is if one ride is down due to mechanical/maintenance, both sides could be down. TTD is fickle enough as it is.
I wonder who went up first with the idea...Intamin saying, hey we can do this, or Six Flags saying, can we do this...
Either way cool idea ish...but kinda lame approach
