Top Thrill 2 Pit Stop | Episode 10 - Test Drive

A ride notoriously shut down and redesigned for shedding items……. Flings something at its highest point during testing surely can’t be the look Cedar Point was hoping for this close to its opening.

Trip reminds me of a time I rode Top Thrill many years ago during Halloweekends. It was pretty cold so I had hand warmers in my pockets. They were still in the wrappers and in my coat pocket. As we crested the top hat, one of them sailed out of my pocket. Could see it floating past us (person behind me asked what it was when we were getting off the ride).

The object from recent testing almost looked like it was launched. Like it had some weight to it. Tough to tell though.

In the absence of further information we can’t assume it’s a serious failure. could be something that was attached by the park that wouldn’t impact normal operations, like a weight. If it’s a chunk of the cars body then yeah that’s an oops.

This is why they test so many hours before opening to the public!

You can't even tell for sure if there's not actual people on the train.

Sit tight fellas ;)

If it was a water dummy, it probably made a satisfying splash, either in the lagoon or on the concrete. Maybe they decided to close snake river due to the risk of falling debris.

From the WKYC article:

“No loose articles will be permitted in line, including cell phones or other objects in zippered pockets,” Clark noted.

It is absolutely ridiculous given the strict no loose article policy that there appears to not be any locker infrastructure that allows riders to ditch their loose articles just prior to the station. Yes, some of us, including me, grew up standing in lines with nothing but ourselves and, in the best of times, a beach ball and some music. But that's just not the case for their audience these days.

I realize they weren't working with a clean slate here, and that as such their options for adding lockers was limited, but c'mon. Was it impossible to install some dual-sided lockers at the south end of the track? As far as I can tell, the only limitation was a self-imposed financial one.

Brandon

Perhaps the locker infrastructure will be located in an area just outside the ride entrance. I realize that means that riders will not have their phones with them while they wait. Or maybe Cedar Point has a plan that might be more acceptable that we know nothing about yet. I have not ridden Steel Vengeance since the locker policy was put in place, so I don't know how exactly that works. I would have a hard time parting with my wallet. Wallets can't be taken on SV either, right?

^^Agreed, other than the part about not working with a clean slate. When compared to the Steel Vengeance situation, that locker system was added after the entire queue was already built, and they reworked it to a pretty functional solution (other than the TSA wand practice). In this case they absolutely had a significantly cleaner slate to come up with a similar solution. I'm equally surprised that the lockers are at the entrance to the ride.

Yeah, I was trying to be generous, considering they had to work within the footprint/infield, but your point is a good one. They were able to incorporate a reasonable solution with what seems like greater restrictions on SV, so there really is no excuse here.

I don't think Tony's response was ambiguous. No loose articles are allowed in line, which, to me, is not an acceptable solution.

Brandon

Here's your solution: Just give your stuff to the wife/gf (to hold) who won't go on this thing anyhow!!

They have to get their training some place. Do you want amateurs working at the airport?

I'll hold my complaints until the "more detailed set of rider guidelines" is available. As annoying as the cell phone ban would be, I'd have a bigger issue with car keys. Worst case I can leave the phone in the car, the keys, not so much. Since I usually don't have anyone to leave stuff with, a locker surcharge every visit would add up quick. Here's hoping for free lockers at bare minimum.

I got the solution. Relocate the Magnum XL-200 lockers over to TT2. We didn't need em' over there the first 30 years anyhow. SMH

Glad to hear it was water ballast that flew off from not being secure properly. Would have been sad if it had been a piece of train.

Would you say that to the water ballast's family?

He was someone's son. Someone's brother.

Sure he always weighed everyone down, but this is a very heavy situation for the family. Don't try to water it down.
