Top Speed !!!

Witch part of the ride should be the fastest.

The Launch or the drop.

A ECC (European Coaster Club) spokesman said that the launch wil be 124 mph. Should the drop be faster, or the same speed as the launch.

The distance between the station and the tower is 500 feet.

In one of the articles at the ttd website it said it will reach 120 mph twice on launch and drop.

Friction would have to slow it down somewhat unless the drop is greater than the hill.
But I think the top speed will be slightly over 120. They just say 120 for a nice round number, therefore more easy to remember and tell others.

i agree with TopThrillDude. I've always thought that the numbers they give for the top speed of a ride aren't completly accurate.

I don't think that's possible.
After the launch the train couldn't go faster, or stay at the same speed after the drop.
The top speed should be straight after the launch before the tower, but excuse me if I'm wrong.
Where are the wizzkids amoung us ;D

Neglecting friction, it's perfectly possible for the train to reach the same speed after the drop as it does on the launch. It's all conservation of energy... at the end of the launch it has all kinetic, at the top of the top hat it has most potential and some kinetic, and at the bottom of the drop it has all kinetic (and it should be the same kinetic as it had after the launch). Friction does dissipate energy, therefore decreasing that final speed, but not by much at all. I'm assuming that the train enters and leaves the top hat at the same height(?).

i went to the ACE NO coaster con and Cedar Point came and talked to us, and they said..."Top Thrill Dragster will not only reach 120mph once... but it will reach it twice" if there is somebody else out there that went to the No coaster con, please make sure i quoted that right.

Launch Speed:Approximately 120 mph in four seconds

Drop Speed:Approximately 120 mph

All the physics disscussed have been simple high school topics. hehe, but if it goes up at 120, it comes down at no more than 120, with external forces, it will be a little less than 120. Don't worry, you won't notice.
...Simple high school pysics...high school physics that I don't really want to think about now that I'm on Easter Break.
Yeah, I agree with Voodoo, going 120 mph you wouldn't know if you sped up 1 mph or slowed down. I still think its fast enough...for now.;-)

Well, the drop's top speed COULD be faster than the launch, if the drop were longer than the climb. Just look at Kennywood's Phantom's Revenge's second drop.

That's not the case on this ride, though.

Of course the speed they tell you is not always accurate...they may even be giving the speeds with the cars empty too, because the car will go faster over the top with less people in it. Of course its not that much of a difference, but it does effect the speed up and over the tophat.

And why dont some of you love pysics? Its so fun...i thought if you were so into roller coasters...and obviously the construction as well, that maybe you would care about SOME things that go into it.

Happy Easter All.

Yeah, just like MF opening year. Advertised at 92 mph, it is now 93 mph. So the speed may not be 100% accurate.

Who cares how fast it goes, all you're going to be able to tell when you're riding it is that you're going faster than you've ever gone before(atleast on a roller coaster).

Enjoy your ride on the big bad bug

Who Cares? Obviously all the people in this forum if they decide to post and give their suggestions. Dont like it? Go away and cry about it.

TTDude, how do you know its at 93?

Steelrider, it is now said that MF goes 93mph, I don't have a source right now but I've seen it many places before but on CP's web site it says 92 (approximatly).

Steelrider, the park you like so much, Six Flags Magic Mountain, recieved a Notice of Closure on 3/8/03. The Notice of Closure says:

Notice of Closure For Violation(s) Of California Health And Safety Code And/Or Los Angeles County Code

Violation(s):

California Uniform Retail Food Facilities Law 114030 + 114040 -Cockroaches-

It says more but I'm not posting the whole thing. Some of us thought the spiders on the web cams were grosse, just imagine eating a hamburger and taking a bite with a cockroach in it. Just one more reason why Six Flags Magic Mountain SUCKS.

Termanal velocity is 120 mph(ask any skydiver)What you must be asking is there enough height to reach that speed on TTD on the down side.Plus add any leftover speed from the launch as you crest the hill..
So if you launch at 120 and crest at say 25mph and if there is enough height to reach termanal Vel.you could be going 145 mph when you reach the brakes.
Isn't that enough to put your butt in a pucker ..

I'm not an old fogey, I'm just an old coaster rider..
No, oldrider, you have a flawed perception of the physics of both acceleration due to gravity as well as terminal velocity. Terminal velocity is the maximum attainable speed due to falling, due to wind resistance. Regardless of how fast you go over the top (if it's under terminal velocity), you will ONLY reach terminal velocity on the way down. Also, you can not add the speed attained from a straight drop + the speed at the start of the drop. It just doesn't work that way. A 10 mph increase in speed at the top at a ride like TTD would only make a 1 or 2 MPH difference (if that) at the bottom of the drop.

Also, terminal velocity for a falling human in a non-streamlined position is approximately 120 mph. It's different for each object. For a feather, it's about 10 mph. For a coaster train, it's probably close to 120, but may be a bit higher, like around 125 or so. For a javelin, it's probably closer to 300-400 mph. I don't have the exact equations for terminal velocity, but they're very complex, and rely on the aerodynamics of the falling object.
