Top Hat Stall... what are the odds?

What did that have to do with anything raptorfn?

Ok, I went over there today. This thing was launching very convincingly! Albeit, only four train-cars, it was getting a good clip over the top hat. And, we were worried about airtime! You'd better make sure the lap bar is tight! No time for a "view", that's for sure.

Hey people.. it won't stall with riders in the train.. ever!

Now, when they add a fifth car, I wonder if they will keep the launch as intense as Dougster is describing...that would be some insane air.

I don't know what I'd like better a fast launch and just barely making it over the tophat with some time to look around, or a fast launch with some awesome air and a fast crest. Probably the latter, which would be the coaster freak in me talking. :)

Incidently, does anyone know why there were only four cars on the train? Nobody over there seemed to know. This isn't something that's customary, is it? Maybe, it's just part of "easing" into full launches. Or, at least, I hope!

(I know. I should be in bed. Can't sleep tonight.)

Dougster, check out this thread where we talked about this subject (scroll near the bottom to CP_bound's post).

You guys are all worried about the nearly impossible. What is more probable is that there might be either some type of wheel malfunction that would cause the train to stop or some other impediment.

I have seen at least a couple of instances where a train has stopped during the inverted portion of a corkscrew. Way back when this thing was being discussed I had questioned how they would get people down if there were a "freak incident". As I recall, Xcelerator doesn't have stairs or an elevator so, presumably, there is a fire truck in the area that can reach 200'.

That has been addressed with TTD and their elevator.

I was wondering, couldn't they have put a mini chain drive on the tophat that could send the train over if it didin't quite make it over? On most other rides you'd probably need a crane to maintain a drive system up so high, but TTD has a maintenance platform on top and an elevator going up to it. Just wondering...

I would like to see these so called "credible sources" that people are talking about, that the train stopped at the top.

First of all, what is the point of having a train stop up at the top? What would they accomplish by doing so?

Second...maybe what people saw was the train just barely cresting over the tophat, you know, just barely rolling and then accrediting that for "stopping" at the top.

Third...the ONLY possible way i can imagine the car stopping at the top, is if a bearing busted on the wheels, something got in the way of the wheels, or part of the train was making contact with the track so it stopped. There is no flat track at the top, i cannot think of one logical explanation for how it could freeze.

So if anyone has some raw proof other than " a credible source told me" let me know.

Agreed... unless something breaks, it's not stopping there, period. That would conceptually be the same reason stated earlier in the thread regarding the stop of various Arrow loopers mid-inversion.

If it does stop on the top, I imagine that it will go again if everyone on the train starts rocking front to back in unison. I don't have a degree in physics but it sounds logical.
Not to cause a problem; Magnum's first year, the train did stop on the second hill and CP had to get firetrucks from Toledo and Cleveland. Granted this only happened one time, in 1989, and the reason given was that the wind guests off the lake were severe. I read this story in the Cleveland Plain dealer, and there was a pic of the people getting rescued, I don't know if the story could be dug up. But if it happened on Magnum, what is the difference with TTD?

That did happen, but it wasn't at the apex. If I remember correctly, it was in the pretzel.

I think I'd have to take the side of the people saying it's just too unlikely to happen. I won't go through all of the reasons that everyone has already said, but unless something malfunctions when it's at the top, there are too many things going against it for it to stall.

I have been reading these posts for a long time and its time for me to throw in my 2 cents. I am siding with Zero-G, Live Entertainment, and Mathew on this subject, I would have never belived it could happen either but...............sorry Jeff, last week!

Whatever, I think you're full of crap. Again, unless something broke or they positioned it there on a pull-through.

I don't know if it happend or not. It's much like people who believe in the big bang theory. Honestly, what is the probability that everything was going to line up correctly. A matter of inches of difference in the location of the planets and the whole universe would fall apart. If you believe the big bang alone created the universe, then TTD stalling on the tophat shouldn't be such a crazy idea.

ONE freeway stamp a day... ONE

So if we believe that God caused the big bang to happen, does that mean God caused the car to (suppossedly) stall on the top? That's the only way I could see it ever happening. The chances are just so small of it being balanced perfectly. So if you want to be stuck up there, start praying :)
