Top 10 stories of the decade

Walt's avatar

I was going our content pages and came across a feature that was never completed. The idea was to compile a list of the top 10 Cedar Point stories from 2000-2009. Procrastination won and I never finished it. Even though it's not complete, I figure it might be fun to share anyway.

The one that says "Mystery construction captivates enthusiasts," what ride was that for? I would guess Maverick or TTD, but every year we are all captivated by spray paint.

Top Thrill Dragster. That guessing game was far beyond anything we've seen before or since.

All that I remember from TTD's construction was the guy pissing infront of the webcam. Internet at its finest.

Let's Get Weird.

I remember when Top Thrill's hill was only up to the first cross beam, it was fall of the previous season and my buddy and I (8th graders at the time) were wondering what that was. Anyways, in line for Magnum we overheard two people saying that it will be 400ft tall and 100+ mph. I remember saying to my friend there was no way because MF was only a few years old and it broke all the records so how could they shatter even those records so soon? Haha needless to say I was surprised when that happened

Very cool! Its interesting to see what was going on before I became a true "hardcore" enthusiast.

the 2003 blackout- I was not at CP that day, but I always thought it would have been cool to be. I was at home instead. But, however, a good friend of mine was at Geauga lake (six flags at the time) that day, of all days. her dad had won free tickets on the radio here in cleveland, and they all went. But the outage did not affect GL for some reason. Most of northern Ohio went out. Her mom called her from home saying the power went out, but rachel was like "everything's fine here" funny stuff. :) Yeah I still remember that :)

I wasn't a "hardcore enthusiast" back in 2003 either so why was Dragster announced so late? Wasn't it like January when it was finally announced? I couldn't imagine waiting that long now.

Enjoy the rest of your day at America's Rockin' Roller Coast! Ride On!

Ah Vertigo. I miss that ride. I rode the revamped version at SF Great Adventure last summer and it just wasn't the same.

Ralph,

There is one set of towers that still have the old "bike" seats and that's at S&S. :)

I guess I need to get to Utah!

The public can't ride it. Engineering Excitement employees and invited guests only.

Something tells me it wouldn't be to hard to be an invited guest. :) I just don't know when the hell Id ever be going to Utah.

If you can afford to get yourself on the "invited guest" list, I think you can afford a day flight out to Utah.

It was definitely not something you wanted to be at the park for. Thousands of confused, angry people. No A/C in any building and obviously no lights to see in those that didn't have windows (the long halls in Breakers). If you were unfortunate enough to be on a ride when the power went out, then you were likely stuck on that ride for a LONG time. Traffic getting out of the park was a nightmare since there wasn't a traffic light anywhere in town that was working. I was at the park that day and wished I had been at home instead.

Little surprised that the merger of GTTP and Virtual Midway was not in the Honorable Mentions, Walt :)

I'm happy enough just hearing stories about that day at the park (of which I've heard many). I don't think I would have wanted to be there. I was driving home from work when it happened, so I just had to deal with a handful of non-operational traffic lights. My house was just outside of the affected area by less than two blocks, so we had power at home.

I can't say I would have either.

I was outside the blackout range, so had no idea what was happening until I got home from work and turned on the news. I remember we ran into a couple people at the bar who were from the Detroit area. They had driven to Grand Rapids because at least we had power.

I was at the park that day, but left before the blackout. I was at my mom's house in Huron when it happened. My drive home was uneventful due to the lack of traffic lights on the highway. :)

I remember that I was riding my bike home from a friend's house at the moment it went out. I got to a main intersection and found it strange that the lights were out. Looking closer, the Tim Hortons that was on that corner didn't have power either. I called home, and family members all over the city and county to see if they had power and no one did. Shortly after that cell phone service went down due to the lack of power (or system overload?) I remember going home and sitting in my dad's old Aerostar and listening to the news and that's when I found out what was up. I remember going for a drive that night with my parents and seeing the dark Detroit skyline.

**For relevances' sake, I went to Cedar Point for the first time ever 3 days before the blackout.

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
