Ton O' Questions

Okay, I know most of these questions have probably already been answered, but they're worth asking again, as I'm a potential new employee to CP. I hope I get a job out there. But here are my questions:

1. What are the chances of getting a job at CP if you have little or no employment history (I only worked 18 days in my whole life)?

2. What kind of questions will they ask in the interview?

3. Someone on AIM told me that I had to call CP for the interview because I'm a potential new employee. Is this true? If so, do I call the 1-800 number or the other one? So confused on this one.

4. If I do get hired and sign my contract (which I'll read carefully before I do), I'll have to use Greyhound to get out to Sandusky. Do I have to call a cab or something to get me to the park? Because I've read on the CP site that someone from CP will pick up international students, but I'm not international. Uh oh.

5. Are there any barbershops in the area? Because I will need one to keep up with CP's grooming standards.

6. Is there a possibility that I can work the whole season?

More as I think of them.

1. Your chances are still good. Two of my friends that came to work at Cedar Point in 2002 with me had never had a job before. Both were hired into rides.

2. It depends on your department as to the questions they ask. The only time I have ever been asked questions during a phone interview was back in 2001. They were customer related questions. How would I deal with unruly guest, guest satisfaction, stuff like that.

3. My first year I did not have to call for my interview. Nor did I for my second or third year. But you can call if you want to. Give it some time and if you don’t get a call, then go ahead and give them a ring. And yes, you can call 1-800-668-JOBS. From there they will connect you.

4. Im pretty sure you will have to call for a cab to come and get you. Someone else might want to answer this one.

5. Yes. There are plenty of shops in the area. Including one at the mall.

6. By the whole season do you mean April 1st to October 31st? If so then that will depend on your department as well. Last summer I started April 27th but there were people that started before me. And in 2002 I stayed until Nov. 7th to help clean up. I was told that it is first come first serve as to who gets to start early.

Hope that helpled:)

1. Chances are good for a job at CP, they have a job for anyone!

2. Copy 99er, (I was a Campus Ambassador 2000). Depends on Dept. Rides ask if you are afraid of heights, or if you like slow or fast paced rides. On the application on the back side, you can pick the 3 jobs you would prefer to work and the 3 you would not accept a job for. There is also a space where you can check in a box that you will take any job they have to offer, for better chances of employment. That is an option you have.

Can you work in extreme weather conditions, work well without supervision? Etc.

3. You can call the number above, I conducted interviews at local high schools, and campus job fairs.

4. I also took Greyhound, the station is about 12 miles from CP. My first year I called a cab, the second year, I had a friend pick me up. So a cab would probably be the best bet.

5. When I worked at CP, Mastercuts in Sandusky Mall gave CP employees a discount for their haircuts, sometime in the beginning of the season, the employee service department (ESD) will print out brochures on where CP employees can go and get discounts at different retailers.

6. Whole season, depends if they need you and where. And depends on your availability. I am sure CP can place you where ever they need you, just let them know when you call or talk to an interviewer that you are available immediately.

Man, everyone's been saying my chances are good at getting a job at CP. Hopefully yall are right! I need a job. Bad. I have two more questions:

1. Money related: When I go to cash my check, is there a way I can deposit some money and withdraw it at the end of the season to take it home with me? Because I don't wanna carry way too much dough with me.

2. About the barbershops: Not sounding/being racist, but are they black, white, or mixed barbershops? I'm black, and I've never had a white person cut my hair before.

CP usually strikes up a deal with a local bank and you can have direct deposit put on your checks. For the past two years, it has been US Bank. I'm not sure which bank it will be this year, there's always the possibility of them changing. I do think with US Bank you need to have an account there for like 90 days or else you are charged. They have a lot of branches in a lot of states, so that *shouldn't* be a problem. I think I remember the teller telling my roommate that last year.

Don't worry about getting a job, it's still REALLY EARLY and they haven't done as much hiring as they need to yet! Chances are excellent for you to get a job! My college roommate applied in like April or May to work there (two years ago) and got a job! I am sure you will be fine!

As for barber shops, I have no clue, sorry! :)

My advice, you could open an account with National City in Sandusky (not sure if they do direct deposit with CP checks), their ATM's are all over CP, so you can get to your cash without getting charged a fee for using the ATM in the park. At the end of the season, if you dont want to use National City anymore, go in and close your account. Ask for an official check for your closing balance (I now work at a bank).

Barbershops are like grocery stores, high turnover, so you never know what origin your barber will be! You may be able to do your own investigating when you get there, I just went for cheap. With my CP discount at Mastercuts, my haircut went for about $6-8 (that came to one hours worth of work!).

As far as african american barbors, I would rather go there then mastercuts; lol I have coarse textured hair and "white people" don't know how to handle the "frizz".

<~~White girl that uses afro sheen ;)

i'm african american, and i very much agree with ivy, i went to master cuts once and the stupid lady wanted to put all this hair glue and crap in my hair, and i was 'umm...black gurls don't use that!!' if you are lookin for an african amercian to do your hair, you can usually find a guy that has clippers and pay him about $5-7 to cut your hair, and you'll always see afr. amer. gurls braidin somebody's hair or another (and i've had gurls and guy friends do hair, and they're really good, so you won't look straight up tore up;) ), so basically, if you're of ethnic origin, you'll still be able to get beyond decent stylings
It seems to be that they pretty much hire everyone who applies, and it's still way early. So as everyone else said, you'll probably be hired. I put in my app last year in February, and I got hired into TGI Friday's on the beach- and as you'll find out, that's one of the most desired places to work.

I called in to the JOBS number last year, only because I received an email from a silver tag in my department, saying she'd been trying to get ahold of me and to call her at that number. She wasn't there, but I interviewed with the kitchen manager, and he said they'd get back to me. I waited till a few days after he'd said to wait, and then I called the number again. I talked to her that time, and she told me I was hired and when I started. So anything can happen with that. If you really want the job, be persistent. They're in the midst of hiring -a lot- of people.

I wouldn't worry too much about that unless you're really good at saving money. Money tends to go as quickly as it comes at CP. Realistically, I wouldn't plan on going home with much saved, unless you're hardcore about saving. Your best bet is to sign up for direct deposit and have a debit card. They make it really simple for you, and everyone can have an account with them, even if you owe money to other banks. ;)

And there's always someone around who's offering to cut hair for $5, so I wouldn't worry about that either.

You'll have to take a cab from the Greyhound station, but if you're short on cash, do your research and call around in advance to find the cheapest fare.

Along with that, the more money you can bring to tide you over till your first check, the happier you will be. Everyone's flat broke in the beginning, borrowing money, having money wired, selling **** off- and you have to remember that if you go in the early weeks, the employee caf isn't open and you have to live off of pizza, chinese, and commons store food unless you have a car, or a roommate with a car. Still, you're buying fast food- which costs money.

Hope this helps you.

Thank you for answering my questions so far, you all. I just have four more questions:

1. Should I call on the 6th abut my job or should I wait a week? I emailed CP about it and they said to allow 7 to 10 days for my app to be processed, yet other people say to call them on the 6th. And when they answer, what do I say? Do I say I'm calling for an interview or something?

2. About how much does the cab cost to get me from the Greyhound station to the park?

3. Once I arrive at the park, where do I go to process in?

4. Dumb question: Is working at CP fun and enjoyable?
*** This post was edited by V Dogg 12/29/2003 2:33:27 PM ***

Can anyone answer those last four questions?
i am not sure about the answers for the first two questions. when i went to process in i went to human resources and they did some things and guided me where to go for the rest. and for the last question, YES, cp is the best job i ever had and i cant wait to return to where ever i work this coming year. but cp is what you make of it. if you enjoy what you do and have fun doing it, this will be a summer you will never forget!!!

As for the "hiring everyone who applies" thing.. That is not true at all. They turn away ALOT of people.

I pray to God one of those people will not be me. Thank you for your answers to all my questions, but I will still would like the last four answered a bit more accurately by someone more experienced.

I can give advice on 1, 3 and 4.

1) I'd give them a week to get caught up. They are real busy right now working on returning assignments.

3) Human Resources will be your first stop. It is the tan building near Cedars, across the road from the Marina gate.

4) Just like any job, it's what you make it. If you make it fun.. it'll be fun.. If you let it be bad.. it'll be bad.

VDOGG, to answer your question #2. It will cost like 5-10 bucks. Super cheap. My car got impounded last year and I had to use a cab for a day running around everywhere to get my car and money to get my car out. It will be cheap. And don't get scared when they pull up, they look pretty sketchy in their broke down looking '94 Minivan. LoL.

That has a lot to do with people that can't work critical dates including mid August till the end, and in early May. It seems like late May till mid August is the easiest dates for most college students. Some people get hired with such dates, but they are limited to a first come first serve. Most would much rather have more full time employees for halloweekends over ride prides, but staff is hard to come by for those date.

Eddy the retard is awesome.

yes no maybe so
On the money issue: I ended up saving a buttload of money by opening up two accounts at US Bank (but it should be wherever they decide to do direct depositing) and had $50 bucks automatically deposited into my savings account every paycheck.

Then it didn't seem like I missed it, cuz it was like I never saw it. And at the end of the season I had about $700 to $1000 saved up. US Bank also has some seriously awesome online services as well. I don't live anywhere near any of the branches but I can manage my money superbly.

On the subject of it being a fun place to work: It's definitely what you make of it. I had a ton of fun, but also a ton of drama. Looking back on it, it doesn't seem so bad, but at the time...ooh, boy.
