Tires Removed?

On Monday 5-19 all the tires from all five trains were removed and the big fake engine on the red train was missing as well. I didn't notice Dragster running til somewhere around 3. We went to get in line around 7:45 and it was down. They wouldn't let people get in line for it so we ran over and got in MF's line and when we were finished around 9 Dragster was running again.

From what I understand, the tires themselves were 'turning' because they were making contact with either cement or track in a way they weren't supposed to (which is what caused the turning).

Joey: Sure. What? About uh, you showering with your mom?

Ross: I actually had a topic in mind!

i dont think that the tires were comming in contact with the track seeing as how the tires are a good 10 inches off the track... but it could have happened, i think they also have a couple inches of clearence in the station, but i could be wrong. whatever is causing this i hope they fix it soon because i really liked the effect that the tires added to the ride

I agree with MeanStreaker it makes them look sweeter!
It all deals with moment of inertia. With the tires rotating on the back of the train, you add rotational energy to the train. I'm not studied well enough to know whether or not that would create positive or negative work. However, I can say that the tires would have to be moving very fast in order to create significant amounts of energy. Maybe they were, given Dragster's specs. Weird situation!
I was under the impression that the tires were to be stationary...at least they appeared to be so when I rode it...

If the wheels are free to turn, I think that it would only be natural for them to rotate in reverse, and depending on how fast they turn they could definitely affect the train's performance. I could also see them turning being a safety issue.

The Matrix: Reloaded!

I don't think the spinning would effect the train while moving in a linear motion, because in the experiment with the spinning wheel, you only feel it when you tilt it. Because of this, my guess is that it might be causing a problem on the twists, and maybe the axels can't handle the force, thus risking one of them flying off. That wouldn't be pretty...

The train does twist, though.

I don't buy the rotational theory, though. How fast do those tires really spin? They're not driven by anything, are they?

It doesn't matter what axis the tires are spinning on... the mere fact that the tires are spinning means that the energy to make them spin has to come from somewhere. If it's from the train, then it has the potential to affect ride performance.

Has anybody rode since Saturday, are the tires back on yet? I'm going Friday and if I take pictures the trains will look odd without the tires.

As of yesterday (Tuesday), the tires are still off.
tires not on as of today.... but the gold train will be on track tomorrow.... :)

TTD=5. MF=77. Raptor 100+ Magnum. 250+ lost count.

I don't know if this is right, but this is what I overheard a park manager at the Magnum gate say on 5/20. Take it with a grain of salt of course. She said that one of the tires snapped off of the train when it crest the hill, it didn't hit anyone. She blamed it on the welds that held the tires on. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's an interesting and well, strange theory.

I was under the impression that the tires could not spin though. I thought it was a bar that was on the train in a fixed position, on the end of it, it had a round plate with the bolts that the tire would slide onto and have the nuts placed on and probably welded in place.

It could be true, InclInE loOpEr, except that it would not have happened on 5/20, as the tires were removed sometime after Noon on 5/17.

My personal pet theory is that it was something like that. Perhaps the tire didn't come off, but something cracked or came loose resulting in the removal of that equipment. But whatever it was, it happened on 5/17.

I was at the magnum entrance on 5/20 also. He meant that they were telling people this then, not that is happened then. I was right in front of the gate and the person said that they will not return because there is a good chance that they would fall off again. They are hoping the GP wont know there were originally tires. They will not return, at least not for this season.

Well then they better reshoot those commercials.........
I dont think CP would be so careless to put on those tires on such weak welds so they would just fall off. IF this did happen, That would SERIOUSLY suck. The best theming element of this ride are/were the tires.

Wow colin, we must have been standing right by each other. LoL.

RideMan, I wasn't saying that it happened on 5/20, thats just when I heard the person talking about it. Sorry for the confussion, I could have phrased it a little better.

Well I think the removal of the tires are the least of CP's worries with this ride. I was there last night (my 5th visit) and the ride was down longer than it was running. (As has been the case each time I have been there.)

I was there monday night, 5-19, and I could have sworn the tires were on all 5 trains. I didn't pay much attention (as I am just reading this topic now), but I am 99% certain I saw the tires. The ride did break down from about 7:30-40ish-8pm. I left at about 8pm.

As far as the tires turning a few times I watched the tires when the train returned on the brake run, and I saw little turning of the tires. But I thought they were on the trains on 5-19 that night.
