We get it, you don't think the Peanuts characters are a good fit for Cedar Fair. Obviously others, including children, think otherwise and that is enough of a reason for the company to continue having a classic, well loved cartoon character as their mascot.
Except no one from this generation of children know who they are. I'm 19, and I didn't even know who they were when I was a kid.
That's why it's tricky to use mascots from shows, they become outdated. It's really not a big deal though, it's not like they're obsessed with snoopy, it's really only in the kiddie areas and although none of the tikes recognize them, I'm sure they think they're cute.
Snoopy has lost a lot of importance to kids (although he's not gone; I've tutored kids who love him). As odd as it sounds though, I don't think he's a lot less desirable.
If you went with Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network or something, you would have more recognizable characters for kids, but you'd also be paying a lot more in royalties and need to be updating a lot more often. You'd also be more at the companies mercy with negotiations.
Peanuts is a bit different. They are recognizable enough that people know who they are when they see them (even most kids know of the Christmas special), but limited enough that people think of them as almost a Cedar Point mascot. Peanuts is also not going to have the same demands as a lot of others would with the agreements as this is a big revenue/exposure stream for them that is harder to replace.
Think about Mickey Mouse. He's far from the biggest Disney character in terms of what kids (or anyone) really watches (although there are some little kid shows with him), but he's instantly recognizable and loved as the Disney spokesman. Snoopy kind of fills a similar roll for Cedar Fair.
Charles Schulz’s ‘Peanuts’ In Feature Deal With Fox Animation And Blue Sky Studios

Didn't know where else to post this but felt it was kinda relevant to this topic. Anyone familiar with Fox knows that they also brought back Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield with some crappy live-action movies. Now this isn't entirely the same situation as those movies, since it's supposedly being handled by the Schulz family but I'm not sure how much control they'll have over it once it begins production at Blue Sky. Knowing Blue Sky and the film's slated director, I atleast expect a fairly decent film with some beautiful animation but can't help worrying that you'll see the Peanuts gang singing pop songs over the credits (ala Horton Hears a Who!).
Anyways, just thought some people here would find this interesting.
there have been a few movies of the peanuts characters travel, such as
summer camp and France.
Wouldn't it be great if they made a movie 'Charlie Brown and the gang go to Cedar Point'.
number of times to Cedar Point:50s/60s/70s/80s-3,1995-1,1996-27,1997-18,1998-13,1999-20,2000-16,2001-8,2002-7,2003-18,2004-14,2005-18,2006-28,2007-16,2008-17,2009-28,2010-26,2011-27,2012-21,2013-18,2014-24,2015-29,2016-46,2017-13,2018-14,2019-10,2020-0,2021-3 Running Total-483 72,000 miles traveled for the point.
Snoopy and the gang are my buddies! I would be so upset if they got rid of them! They are at my happy place of Cedarpoint!!!
Life is like a rollercoaster! It is full of ups and downs
I saw the commercial about the movie too, and immediately thought about this thread.
A sad indictment of my mental state, I do realize...
I say keep the Beagle. I never needed a mascot to associate with the park but I think Snoopy makes a good one. My kids really like him and when they were little they called Geauga lake "Snoopy Park" and it was a big help that I could tell them it's OK that "Snoopy Park" closed because there's another big "Snoopy Park" called Cedar Point and we'll take you there next year. Last year we left the park without checking out the Snoopy Boutique and my 10 yr old made sure to let me know that wasn't acceptable. As much as I love Spongebob I think Snoopy has more class.
We had just checked into the Breakers when Snoopy entered the lobby ( July 3, 20013). My 3 year old grandson ran to him and gave him a huge hug. His 18 month old brother gave Snoopy hi fives. Snoopy will always be a big part of CP for them.
I wish Kings Island would have kept up with the Hanna Barbara licensing. That was awesome and nostalgic. When Paramount took them out they ruined what they had. Cedar Point should never make the same mistake. I loved Hanna Barbara land and everything they had there.
I have a season pass to Knotts, in fact the wife and I just walked in the door from being there. Knotts is where Cedar Fair inherited the Peanuts franchise from. It has served Knotts well, from Camp Snoopy to the latest ice show "Snoopy Unleashed!". The kids out here readily recognize the characters as they walk about their dedicated section of the park, lots of photo ops being taken. It's all about how the franchise is handled. It's iconic, it's popularity spanning several generations. It's now under the wings of only it's second owner in over fifty years in print, with part of the stock being in hands of the Schultz family.
Like it or not, I hope and believe that Snoopy is here to stay. Every time I see the peanuts figures I think of CP, not the comics or TV specials.
I think the characters are one of the few areas where six flags beats cedar fair.. And beats them bad I should note. Superheroes are very easily recognized by all ages because they have the adult movies and child shows/toys incorporating the same characters. The nature of rides is compatable with superheroes skills and storylines anyway. Snoopy himself is good because he is cute and will be cute to kids even if they don't know the background but the other human characters don't have that same appeal. I think snoopy is fading and continuing to fade because current parents are the last generation to remember snoopy from their childhood and because of their time with snoopy might want to share those same positive childhood expierences with their children at the park, however as my age group (college age) starts having children snoopy will be completely obsolete because we didnt grow up with him so its not going to mean much to the parents or the kids.
Top Steel: New Texas Giant
Top Wood: Timberwolf (don't judge me..)
Did anyone else notice the growing amounts of Universal characters in the park?
Examples? Minions and the unicorn from Despicable Me at pretty much every single game, the music from E.T., Jaws, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, ect. on WindSeeker.
Forgive me if I'm ignorant to any of the info about the licensing park, but, I didn't know that they had the rights to use those. So, maybe they're slowly bringing in Universal characters to run alongside of the Peanuts gang. I'm not saying they're going to have meet and greets with Universal characters for the kids or themed rides in the future, just a curious observation.
"we are the music makers & we are the dreamers of dreams."
The park pays licensing fees for the music. I assume the prize company takes care of the licensing for the stuffed Minons and such. As a matter of fact, Universal Orlando licenses Spiderman (Marvel), Hulk (Marvel), Dr. Suess, and Harry Potter (WB) for their themed areas. It is much easier the licensee (in this case Cedar Fair and Comcast) to use popular characters and music like Minions or Harry Potter than to pay and create lesser known characters, music, or whatever the case.

You mean you've never watched the TV specials that they're still showing today when you were a kid?
Upside-down Fun House

I'm sure someone already wrote this, but Snoopy isn't going anywhere. That's like Disney World replacing Mickey.
Kris, no. I've seen parts of the holiday ones before but I couldn't tell you the characters names. I mean, I know several of the names but I'm not sure who is who. Charlie Brown and Snoopy is all I know. Titandwedebil who posted above (my same age group) said the same thing. Cedar fair is really my only exposure to the characters. I think the majority of our generation would agree, but I don't think many of them are on the site!
