tiki twirl

Does anybody have pictures of the 'TIKI TWIRL" ride that used to be where the matterhorn is now? The other day we (me and my girlfriend) were talking about the rides cp has removed over the years , and this one came up.

All that I can remember about the ride was that it was simuler to calypso, with a lot of theming. I remember riding it when I was young.

Any pics or info would be great......thanx.

I seem to recall a ride called something like "Space Cadet", or something. It was a plane/space ship that you could control with a bar that went acroos the front of you. Pull toward you, go up. Push it away, go down. Is this right, oldcper? Jeff? Come to think of it, I remember "Tiki Twirl", as well. Wow! Every once in awhile, I read something that floods my brain with some good memories. Or, shall I say, memories as I see them.

im almost positive that the Tiki Twirl was really similar to Calypso but the things you sit in had a roof over them. each individual bucket had a roof that slightly resembled a thatched hut. when the ride started up, the thatched huts spun, which had to look pretty interesting...

Yes, Tiki Twirl was very similar to Calypso.

Dougster - sounds like you're talking about the Satellite Jets.

I don't remember the spinning roof, but, yes there were coverings over each car. For a time, Calypso had individual roofs as well.

WOW OldCPer...that photo is OLD;)

Satellite Jets is another ride that was located in numerous locations during it's years of service. I forgot it was near the front of the park as shown in your photo...is that around 1970?...I do remember SJets in the middle of the main midwway (where the ball fountain is, and then also the ride "finished" it's career over where the Calypso is today.

Ah, yes. The Satellite Jets. It was one of my favorites, as a kid. Second to Bayern Curve. It was, to me, as close to a roller coaster as you could get without riding a roller coaster. Kinda funny, now that I think about it. I was a real wuss! Was!

1986 was the final season.

That pic was taken in 1969, I BELIEVE using one of those disk cameras where you popped a disk cartridge into it. Which also explains the crappy picture.

My first trip to CP was in 1966 when I was 12 years old.

what i meant was that the roofs (coverings) attached to the cars spun WITH the cars, since they were attatched. too bad modern calypso couldnt be as interesting...

Aha! THAT's why I always mixed up Calypso with Tiki Twirl!! I must've been remembering Calypso when it still had the covered cars!

Yea...swab used to have covers over each of the seats as well. But for some reason, all the scenery objects on the rides have slowly disapierd over the years.
that's pretty sad... i dont tink i was old enough to remember the coverings...when were they removed???

It looks so plain without that stuff now that ive seen it with the coverings,etc.. on the cars.

Part of the reason the scenery was removed on the Calypso involved an accident in the 1980's. The headline in the Plain Dealer read "Collapso". What happened was the center decoration fell over. Fortunately, the ride op noticed it shaking and was able to safely e-stop the ride and remove all passangers before it collapsed. This occured in it's original (not present) location. That led to the removal of much of the center decoration. More was removed when it was moved to it's location by the Blue Streak.

As for the Tiki Twirl, the reason it is so similar to the Calypso is because it was a themed Schwarzkopf Calypso.
