Yes thing have change. Dont remember having to call to get permission to take off rafts. We just had to call to let them know how many rafts we wnet down too. With 22 rafts how many people were on a crew?
Gosh i dont remember exactly how big the crew was. At any given time we had 1 at entrance, 1 at turnstile, 1 in tower, 1 at crowd, 1 at field, and 7 on platform. If memory serves me correctly i would guess our entire crew was about 25. And we didnt were shorts back then like they do now. Horrible brown pants and it was so hot on that platform in the sun. Keep the questions coming, bringing back so many memories for me!
Pants! There is no way I could wear pants on that platform. I was burning up all summer wearing the shorts. We were lucky if there was a nice breeze off the bay. What was with the pants, did the entire park wear pants or was it a frontier town thing? Is it true that Thunder Canyon was longer back then than it is today? When we did have an entrance position I likeed it because it was the onnly position in the shade other than field, but at entrance you at least got to talk to people. I wonder how long Thunder Canyon will last at Cedar Point before they tear it down? The ridership on this ride is not very big anymore. I think they need to update it.
The ride is the same length as back then. Oh and all male ride ops had long pants then, entire park. I remember in a "question and answers" forum with upper managment someone asked if the guys could ever were shorts, and they said "never". No kidding. And being TL then i finally got them to let me go to the field position by about august. Peggy Bertsch was rides manager then, hello to her if she reads this, we got along really well. I always had to be on the platform or in the tower. It was a great summer though, we were always busy since it was the new ride. 2500 riders per hour on most days. yikes
That would be crazy if we still had to wear pants. Some days it is just to hot to be wearing pants. Today the person in charge still has to be on platform or in controls. Platform sucks since there is no shade other than under the stairs, but running 22 rafts there probably was no time to hang around under there. Did you have to wear a life jacket out in field?
