Theft

Ok. So this will be my first year at CP. I just don't understand the theft. Can't you just lock your door? Or do they break doors left and right? I guess I'm curious because I've lived in on campus dorms here at school for 3 years, and haven't had any problems. Could someone please enligthen me?

If you don't know your rommates when you move in (as most employees do not know all of their roommates), then you leave your stuff open to them and their irresponsibilities any time you are not there (which means work, play, etc...)

You would not believe how many people leave their rooms unlocked while they go out, sleep, etc...

As you said, YOU can lock your door, but trusting your other roomates to do it every time is a big step.

I would honestly recommend not bringing anything that you cherish or of any value because they have a tendency to disappear and before you know it, you're roommate has moved out with your stuff.

i lived in 1001 commons last year and i prossed out without anything of mine gettin stolen but my best friend and my other roomate wasnt so lucky my best friend brian mitchell got a brand new tv and a nintendo gamecube stolen. my roomate dan baker got 2 playstation 2's stolen with a bunch of games all together 3,000 dollars in stuff. jason sharedon stole all of this we cant find him or he would of been in jail already my advice is dont bring valuable stuff to cedar point cause the stuff with probally be stolen if it is worth a lot of money

I also had a problem. A roommate that we thought was our friend and had fun with got fired and decided to steal a whole bunch of our stuff. So be prepared to keep valuable stuff (even clothes) locked up in your locker. The cedar point police don't do anything about it. They told us they couldn't do anything because she was in a different state. So just be prepared and lock things up. The lockers are pretty big and you can fit a lot in it. As for TV's and stuff, just be careful and room with people you know you can trust.
And that's one more advantage to living on point! You only have one roomy. I would say though that you should only trust people you know where they live in their hometown. So if they quit/get fired, and are in an angry rage and decide to steel your stuff, you can track them down and you'll know where to find them.

I know guys that had stuff stolen from their dorm room and one kid who had thousands of dollars worth of games, systems, and stereo equipment stolen from his apartment. When you are in the apartments with fifteen other roommates, half of whom you dont know and then some of whom get fired, you run a pretty good chance of getting jacked. I know my roommates, so if my sister of my bestest CP friend steal from me, I'll just rough 'em up a bit. lol ;) love ya steph and Marg!

I took my laptop. I kept it locked in my locker, along with all of my clothes and my wallet, etc. I never had a problem.

Never, that is, until Bonus Weekends, which are filled with Ride Prides (AKA College Students Who Don't Care About Anything Except Free Pancakes). Of all things, my cologne and my sunglasses were stolen from my room while I was in the shower.

But the lockers in Commons dorms was the main reason I lived there.

"Hmm. . .we don't have anything like that. . .but I can give you this comment card."

This past summer my one roomate got fired mid-season. I found out a few weeks later that he stole my Savings ATM card and drained my account. I wasn't the only person he did this to. He took a great deal of money from many many other's, that he was supposed to be friends with. All I can say is DO NOT trust anyone you room with. Keep all of your belonging's locked up in some kind of safe or something, and when there is a fire drill, make sure that you take it with you then too LoL.
Wow, people really surprise me sometimes. Hey Ty, did you ever catch the guy?

I'm rooming in the Cedars with my 10-year best friend so if he decides to steal anything, I'll personally slit his throat. How are the door locks in the Cedars? We were actually thinking about installing our own locks...maybe magnetic once we get out there... :)

If you've ever seen any great old-time movie about log cabins and summer camps and stuff, then that's Cedars. Very flimsy walls, no heat (or A/C) and the doors are just boards of wood held on by screws. The doorknobs don't even feel all that secure.

sigh.

2 years, not a thing touched.

It's exactly the same as living in a dorm at school.

Don't get freaked because you only hear the minority. More people leave with everything than those leaving minus a couple things.

But if you're still paranoid... bring a padlock for the locker.

It is true that some people try to steal stuff at CP. My second year one of my roommates got fired, and actually was attempting to pack up a box full of my *dishes* (if anything is a sign of being highly low-class, that's it!) when I caught her in the act.

However, James is right; not everyone is a thief at the Point, but it is true that a lot of people without any qualms about thievery end up being hired. To that end, I would suggest just being careful with your things; lock up your valuables when you're not in your room, and don't let people borrow things that are important to you as they might not be returned. You don't need to be paranoid or afraid about anything happening; just take precautions and make smart decisions. I have always brought a small lockable toolbox that I chain to my bedframe and hide under the bed where I keep important things like my checkbook, savings account book, and Social Security card. You could get a large lockable trunk and do the same thing if your room doesn't have lockers. The theory is "out of sight, out of mind." If people don't know you have it, they won't think to take it.

Well, the last few posts have made me feel better about the living situation. Nonetheless, I am still gonna try and live in Commons. Thanks for the responses.

in regards to your important papers, stacks of cash, bank cards, etc...

goto a store and buy a 10$ cashbox. On the bottom, they have a few screw sized holes drilled.

And presumably for this reason, they also have a few screw sized holes drilled on the shelves in the lockers.

get a screw and a bolt. Thread the screw from underneath thru the locker shelf and into the cashbox. then bolt it.

lock the cashbox...and its going nowhere.

James is very wise! Listen to him! :)
If you have insurance that covers you whilst you are at CP it may also help to take pictures of anything valuable, and/or take a note of serial numbers. Buy a uv type pen (not sure exactly what they are called). You can then write your name on things like computers etc (if you are thinking of taking them). then if they do get taken you can prove that they are yours.

You dont really need any bulky valuables though. Remember that a lot of employees (like myself) have come from abroad, with a single suitcase. The only valuables I had were my cash card (always on me) and my passport (locked in the locker at commons). I had a great summer, and actually enjoyed not being glued to the tv or computer for the 3 months.

Or just live on point. I have never had anything stolen and we have always had computers, dvds, etc. The thing is just being smart-locking the computer up, locking your door, noit leaving valuables out, etc. But on point, things are a little quiter and you don't have to live with as many people, which I think helps.

And Gold has the best shower pressure and heat!
