The Wrath of Time

I would imagine it comes down to issues of safety, viability & capacity. There is probably a certain effect from the "classic" moniker as well. As long as a ride is safe to operate, and is viable, meaning you can continue to maintain and repair it without a huge capital outlay, and has a reasonable capacity for riders, I can see no reason to remove it. As for the "classic" aspect? That's Marketing with a captial "M".

Mind you, I am nowhere near an expert on any of these subjects. I am merely an enthusiast, and trying to apply a little objective common sense to what can be an emotional issue.

Steel and wood structures, all other things being equal, should last indefinitely, given proper, continuing care and maintenance. The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883. Still there. Golden Gate bridge, 1939. Still there. However, these two structures have dedicated crews who are out, every day of the year, inspecting, maintaining, painting, repairing, replacing. While the dynamics are different, I cannot see why the same should not apply to a roller coaster. As long as you can obtain, or manufacture new parts, and replace them immediately upon wear, the mechanism should continue to operate as designed.

Marketing is another matter entirely. If people are "bored" with a ride, and usage drops to a level where it costs more to operate and maintain than it returns in rider satisfaction, then it is time to consider a new usage for the land.

Oh, and Cedar Point does not have a space problem. (tm)

I think we all know that DT will be for the first to go, but not for a while. I see a set of twin mouse coasters going there in the future.

Old Mean Streak will probably be around for at least another five. It's a great ride. I still like to ride it even if it is a little rough. That's a woodie for you.

Corkscrew is the starter inversion coaster for little ones. My first inversions were on Double Loop at Geauga Lake.

CCMR won't be leaving because it's such a great ride for the Frontier Town theme. Arrow mine trains look way more realistic than these new fangled ones. Their wood supports look very mine-like.

Magnum won't be leaving because it goes right through Soak City and really doesn't take up a lot of space in the park. They're not going to build back where the pretzel is.

I think Tank has written one of the most intelligent posts I have read on here in awhile. It all comes down to common sense.

I found the one about will the weather stop CP's opening day to be more intelligent but everyone is allowed his opinion. ;)

He wasn't talking about any time soon. He was saying 20+ years from now.

Believe it or not the wooden roller coasters have alot longer of lifetime than the steel.

How do you figure? There aren't any steel coasters to compare with the wooden ones built in the 1920's. Anything that is well taken care of will last forever. Blue Streak is 41 years old and is still going strong, CCMR is 36 and still running fine too.

CCMR just has a wooden frame. The track itself is steel. They used the same construction style on Gemini.

The one thing about this topic is we dont know. There really isnt much data we can go back and look on. There really is only a history of about 100 years of data and most of the 90+ year old coasters no longer exist.

101 on Magnum and counting...

I know it is not a coaster but i think that White Water Landing is going through its last years but i could be wrong.

Any ride can last as long as the park wants it to, just as long as it is properly maintained.

I live in Rochester NY and we have a park called seabreeze. They have a coaster called JackRabbit. It was built in 1920. Enough said. http://www.rcdb.com/ig227.htm

I am also in Rochester, I love the JackRabbit!!!

Back to the point... some of the old coasters are so nostalgic and fun! I am wondering when they will get rid of Demon Drop!
