The lakeside midway of the 1970s.

Does anyone remember for the lakeside midway looked in the 1970s. It was filled with a lot of rides that now are a rarity or gone altogether. There was the Bug, Cuddle-Up, Rock-o-Planes, Hammer{loop-oplane}, Rocket Ships, the original carousel building, Flying Scooters, Scrambler, giant Slide, Bayern Kurve plus many oldtimes games and the funhouse. This area changed a great deal in the late 70s as some rides were retired and others moved as the park expanded. The original water park, changed the look even further especially when "The Wave" opened in 1984.

well i wouldnt remember....I wasnt born yet... sounds neat though

I remember it. The rocket ships in particular were cool. What a shame someone doesn't step up to bring those back.

I was not born yet either but it sounds really neat. I really think that Six Flags ruined Geauga Lake. I love roller coasters but Geauga Lake is the family park and Cedar Point is the thrill park. I don't want to offend anyone by saying these things about six flags because it is just my opinion. The whole time it was six flags I maybe went there twice. But now that it is Geauga Lake again and owned by the Cedar Fair people I went there three times this year and had a far better time than I did when it was six flags.

I think you're not familiar with the park's history. The waterfront changes started with The Wave and got worse as they packed in more slides. I know The Wave was pre-Premier Parks (Six Flags), but didn't pay attention enough after that.

I think the waterpark was one thing Funtime really got right, particularly the Turtle Beach area which for many years stood as the best example of a kids waterpark anywhere.

Let's remember that Funtime made decision with limited land and the Boardwalk really wasn't bad. In fact, I'd say that park was pretty well organized from a layout point of view under Funtime. Western Village seemed to work. The waterpark worked. The location of Turtle Beach near Rainbow Island worked.

I do think Premier started off plopping things down in areas without any apparent research and then Six Flags followed suit.

I can only remember back to the year The Wave premiered.
That area of the park was quite different even back then.

The Amazement Park

I remember when The Wave premierd! It was my favorite ride. I was like 6 though.

I remember how the wave had 1 big wave that came every so often, and everyone got excited about that 1 wave! :) Boy how things have changed huh?

Speaking of The Wave... I can remember how rough that "one wave" really was. I have fond memories of getting smacked down onto the cement floor of the pool or getting hit with a nearby head or foot because they never controlled the capacity of it so it could be wall-to-wall people on some days. The best part was trying to hang onto the grab bars in the deep end once the wave hit, what a blast :)

The Amazement Park

For quite a while that was the largest wave pool in the world. Oh the fond memories of trying to clean up "oil slicks" with industrial paper towels in the wave.

Good times.

Ahh the wave. The sights, the sounds... the sights. (if you get my drift ;) ) I loved working the section of the park.

Does anyone have any idea why Premier/Six Flags decided to remove Rainbow Island and The Wave, and put the replacements in each other's place? Was The Wave in really bad shape?

I am looking forward to seeing what is done with Geauga Lake, though it is a shame that what was left of the old waterpark will be gone. I have great memories of the park from the Funtime days, and the early Premier days. Luckily, CF's planning and design department should fix SF's poor planning, and that area will be great again. Heck, maybe they will re-route the monorail to its original route...

If any of this didn't make sense, I apologize,

Sam

Being Mavericky since 2007!

I believe that the decision to replace the wave was based on the non-family aspect to the tsunami style wave. And clearly Rainbow Island was due for a major overhaul.

As for switching the sites of the wave and kiddie land? I would speculate that the park was looking to solve two things.

One, with the wave on the 43 side of the Dipper they were able to fence off and separate the waterpark from the rest of the park more effetivly (remember that for a year or two one was unable to get into the waterpark at any point except for next to Shipwreck Falls?).

Two, having the kiddieland on the old Wave site allowed for a much more centrally located kiddie land with more space (kind of).

I would think that over the next 5-10 years we will see a major facelift to that area of the park. The area I am refering to is the waterfront and old water park area.

Yes all powerful Jeff I have, however the overall area, not just the old Hooks and Neptune Slides. Sorry, I didn't state the obvious in such a way that pleases you who is never wrong.

Don't be a jerk. You're the one that posted the uninformed and obvious question.

Jeff,

I'm not going to get into argument about who is being a bigger jerk on amusement park message boards. Nontheless, I made a comment that was neither uniformed nor obvious. My comment was meant to refer to the area by the ballroom in the waterpark, an area that has not been touched. I was not referring to the Hooks/Neptune Slide area.

Of course my original comment was not specific enough, which was my fault. However, your sarcasm was not necessary. I don't care how important you may think your sites are, but the fact of the matter is you have a real problem talking down to people on these boards.

PS.......Uninformed, your not the only one with strong Cedar Fair connections. I'm sure I'll get booted for this, but it had to be said.

Can you show me where in the nine words I posted I said anything about connections, being wrong, being powerful, or any other such nonsense?
