Switching Jobs....important

I just became hired today to be a food host at donut time, i said yes to the job not knowing i would actually be making donuts and thats definatley not for me.. is there anyway i could call the guy back and possibly tell him im more interested in being a server somewhere or would that not be a good idea?
You can try, server spots are pretty hot items, but I would definitely try. You've got nothing to lose, right?

Before you rethink that, let me tell you how cool that Donut Time place is. It's a brand-new food stand in the park, and it's going to be extremely popular and special, especially at the beginning of the season, because it will be open early for our guests each day before the rides start. I have a feeling a lot of "Important People" (TM) will be spending some time in there to meet and greet. That, and the atmosphere is so very cool -- I just walked in that building on Saturday, and wow, does it look great -- and, they're serving Starbucks coffee...what could be more glorious than that? You might also be cashiering more than cooking...I'm not sure how the jobs are divided up, but if you're friendly with guests and a good cashier, you may find you have that responsibility most often which you might like more.

Anyway, if you still decide that it's really not "Donut Time" for you, here's Cedar Point's policy on switching jobs... (You can review this information in your Employee Guidelines book once you process in).

(1) "After working one full week in your originally assigned position,...you may apply for another job within your own division." That is, if you've been hired into Foods, you can transfer to another Foods location.

(2) "After working 80 hours in your originally assigned division [more or less two weeks], you may be eligible to transfer to another division. Before seeking employment in another division, you must speak with your own department first and obtain signed approval on a transfer form available in your department office. This form must also be signed by the division into which you wish to transfer. Employees are required to work in their original division until all approvals have been obtained and the transfer finalized. Criteria for approval include, but are not limited to, comprelling reasons, good attendance, work performance, availability of the desired position and staffing levels of the original division."

So, the general idea is, be a shining star for a week or so at Donut Time, and then ask to switch. If you're a lousy employee, they're not going to go out of their way to do favors for you, and a new department certainly won't accept someone who has a poor reputation.

GIve it a try you may find out you like it:-D I worked in carts and after about a month i was not enjoying it and I talked to my silver tag and he helped to transfer me to Patio Relations for the last part of the summer...It was really easy to get transferred for me anyways...A week after I asked to get switched I was transferred. I would suggest to give a try and show them how awesome of an employee you are and I am sure they will try and work something out for you:-D

u actually have to work 80 hours at that job to transfer to another place at CP
OhioGurl: Take a close look at both Lee's and Amanda's posts - they both have very good points. Working in food service anywhere - not just CP - has a certain negative stigma about it; however, you will find no prouder group of people than those in Foods at CP (I can say this from experience - I was seasonal in rides for 4 years then went full time in Foods - after leaving CP, I am now a GM for a regional restaurant chain). Not to say that there isn't pride amongst those in rides, but that "negativity" surrounding those in Foods merely fuels those in that division to become a stronger team and an extraordinary part of CP! I have seen my fair share of employees process in, having merely "settled" on a job in Foods because that's what they were offered. Many leave when their contracts are up vowing that there's no better place to work! You have been hired for a BRAND NEW location - that, in itself, says alot about your interview. Show them what you've got, be proud of your job and dedicate yourself to pleasing every guest that walks through your door (no matter how annoying they might be at times :))... If, after giving it your all, you're not happy, then keep an open communication with your silver tag - if you've proven that you can go the extra mile, then I'm sure they will be more than happy to go the extra mile for you to ensure you have an OUTSTANDING summer! The moral of this post is, "Don't knock it till you try it!" :)

Edit: Lee... ship me an email (it's in my info).

Starbucks coffee

A definite upgrade from the dreck served in the rest of the park. This is good news.

I agree with the coffee comment. Once last year, I was at the breakers coffee store getting a cup of coffee. The lady in front of me complained to the guy behind the counter about how bad it tasted. I sort of went of auto pilot and said 'yeah the coffee is terrible at CP...' Then I looked at it. Tea coloured. I asked the gal to make a fresh batch. She looked a bit hesitant to dump a whole machine full of coffee, so I just asked her to find a manager. That and I went without coffee..

Having nice coffee is important to me, but I shrug it off since I'm one of the season pass types who typically spends under $10 per visit.

Rest assured that the starbucks at Donut Time will cost at least 2x what the coffee in the rest of the park costs.

A cup of dreck for the drive home on a chilly night is fine. In the mornings, I want *real* coffee and am happy to pay for it. If I'm coming in that day, I'll stop at one of the rest stops on the turnpike and grab a cup. If I'm staying overnight, I'm usually in LP and have a coffee maker with some decent stuff brought from home.

whoops... guess you shouldve asked questions during that part of the interview when they ask you if you had any ;)

Be realistic with her ppl... they won't transfer you the first month. You can ask and plead and whatever, but they'll say "we're understaffed." By mid/late june when everything's in full swing and the park is fully staffed you'll get a transfer... but definitely not serving somewhere.

Server/bartending positions are the first things to fill up, probably in January...for obvious reasons.

Pay your dues this summer @ the donut place and make it a point to meet one of the restaurant managers so you could get in next year.

And definitely try not to accumulate many points this summer, server positions are in such high demand that you don't want to ruin any chance you have at landing one.

I understand the whole "not wanting to make donuts" thing. And I understand the whole "not wanting to eat donuts" thing. If there is anyone who should be tired of donuts, it is me, having worked at Dunkin Donuts for 6 years or so. My mom has worked there since I was 5 (I am 23 now) OhioGurl, I understand your plight. I feel for ya girl. LOL

I just felt as if I could put in my 2 cents. Though it might not be worth quite that much. :-D

donuts can be ate every once in a while, but making them, thousands a day...lol oh yeah...

my friend got hired at a restaurant a week before me,.....as a server..i thought i had a good chance.l ol

gotta admit, magnumjames is partially right! You should have spoken up during the interview!

As far as getting transferred i'm guessing thats his personal opinion ;-)

Working in a brand new location is a priviledge so you must have had an awesome interview!! Give it a try, it may be fun!! I also checked out that location on Saturday, and let me tell ya, it's looking sweet!!!! I can't wait to go there for my Starbucks!!!! As far as making Donuts all day-don't forget that there are many positions to running a stand/restaurant-so don't think that making donuts all summer long is the only thing you will be doing!
This will be my 5th summer at Cedar Point in Food Services, and let me tell you, there is NO place else on earth that you will have a better experience than here at Cedar Point...give it a try :-)

just my opinion!

I think you should just make the best of it. Unless your contracted position is "donut maker" then I wouldn't complain much. I was hired as a greeter last year and did just about everything at Johnny Rockets. I took out trash, washed dishes, helped stock, ran food, picked up food orders, made shakes, sat people, cleaned tables... etc. etc. Just about anything imagineable I did it. Basically, you don't have to do the same thing everyday. I literally was in a different position every week for staffing reasons. For the most part it kept my job interesting. Sometimes it was all guest interaction and others it was just me washing dishes. Anyhow, you could be lucky and have a really awesome crew that you love. I think that should be your biggest concern. Just give it a shot! Btw, where is your friend serving?

Starbucks sucks.....they should contract with Tim Horton's....much much much better coffee.
Plus, Tim Horton's is associated with...mmm, hockey. ^_^ (Not that I get anywhere near a cup of coffee for my caffiene fix, anyway).
