Storm damage to power lines on the causeway

There are almost as many public utility experts in this forum as there are gorilla experts trolling around the internet right now.

My in-laws live a stone's throw from the Point and didn't have any idea there was bad weather. Strange how that works. I wonder if the phone lines for the Point are on those above ground poles? In our community they have been replacing wood poles with concrete poles (I'm in hurricane country) but they are keeping the old wood poles up right now because the phone company doesn't want to pay to move their lines from the wood to the concrete. Go figure.

If phone service is questionable then you are dealing with life safety issues whether there is power on the peninsula or not.

I wonder what a day and a half loss of revenue does to the bottom line at CP?

The park has done a great job at getting the word out today, but there will people who will still show up this morning. And that's nothing against those guests for not knowing or against Cedar Point for not doing enough. Just the way it goes.

After that performance by the Cavs, it may have been better to have no power and miss the game. That was awful. At least in Game 1 they came back and even took the lead for a little while in the second half.

This story made the WGN Morning News here in Chicago this morning. The very handsome Marcus LeShock does a "Trending This Morning" segment and led today with Cedar Point's weather woes.

I'm guessing it was a frustrating trip home for the employees. Bus trip all the way around the Chaussee? Walkable?

We're literally debating steel vs wooden poles for a freak storm that potentially produced a waterspout and that CP has barely any control over (this is the Utility Co. not really CP at all)....

My head hurt..I think the bigger issue was hey the park did right & issued refunds/tickets to people, made people as comfortable as possible for those that stayed, and is doing right by getting everything done & ready to open back up Tuesday.

This is a multi million dollar company, they know what they're doing people.

I think for 2017 we are finally going to get that RMC conversion on the causeway posts.

I don't think they're too concerned about the bottom line. In 2014 their out-of-park revenue included "$2.3 million of proceeds from a business interruption insurance claim" relating to the water main break, so, I'm sure they'll do another claim this time. Not to mention, it's still early in the season and many people may schedule a trip for later in the season.

I think all of the news coverage CP is getting for the closure is actually good for the park.

There is no damage to anything on the peninsula, I would not worry at all about your Tuesday reservation. Right now everything in the park looks normal, all of the ride lights and lighting that is normally on is on. Seems like the entire park has power. I bet the Monday closing has more to do with the fact that the Causeway will still be closed than with the power situation.

Basically hurricane force winds, not surprised at the damage.

Still not surprising. The storm was strong, given a utility pole can be from 200-600 pounds depending on the class. I'm not an electrical engineer or know anything about other than what Google just brought up. But still. it snapped/pulled a 200 foot pole out of the ground and dropped it a few feet away.

Im just glad nobody was injured and it was only poles that got destroyed. Definitely could have been a lot worse.

Yep, hardly a disaster in the grand scheme of things.

Did we really need data to confirm that there were damaging winds? :)
