Star Spangled Banner

With the new gate-opening time this year at 10am instead of 9am, when does the Star-Spangled Banner play? Used to be at 9am when the gates opened, but that wouldn't make all too much sense now, would it?

10am... And it pisses me off each morning the number of young kids who won't take thier hats off or just continue to talk through it..

You'll never catch me short of standing at attention facing the direction of the main flag outside the front gate..

Ya know, I used to be a bit defiant when it came to hearing the SSB, but after I watched Saving Private Ryan, it totally changed my perspective on what that flag means for me.

Just remember that, ironic as it might be, it's your very right to ignore the national anthem, even if it is in poor taste.

First off, I dont really get the point (pun intended) of playing the anthem at park opening. But what really upset me on opening day was that there was no flag in sight. It seemed really silly standing there with my hat over my heart and I couldn't find the blasted flag. If you're going to do something, do it right. All those marching band folks and not one of them could have held a flag?

It does have Patriotic intentions like any big event or gathering would to start off the day or event, however CP also uses this as a Universal time to open the gates and standardize all coming in at the same time...

I do get annoyed when people don't show respect during the National Anthem. All of us employees stop what we're doing and put our hands on our hearts. It gives you a good feeling before starting another day of work.

I still don't exactly understand why CP isn't more international, given the proximity of Canada and the huge number of non-US employees.

Pretty simple.. it sits in United States soil...

This is just one of those topics that really gets to me ,havin glost several relatives to war and volenteering several years of my life to the cause in the 80's and 90's.

True... Texas v. Johnson, 1989. Even flag burning is legal, although a travesty.

Why not? Worried that the foreign folks might teach the locals a little something about work ethic? Ask Cheeseonastick, or whatever name he's using these days about how well they work and just how much they appreciate even the chance to work. Not only are mom and dad not there to help them, but they'll probably make more at a Cedar Point summer than their parents will in an entire year.

Yes, Cedar Point resides on US soil. Yes, we've all had relatives that fought in or died in various wars. Yes, many of us have served in some capacity our country. These are all important things that Americans should appreciate. However, patriotism is not the same as arrogance, and it's something our government and our citizens are guilty of far too often.

The United States was not, is not and never will be the center of the universe, particularly in a world that gets smaller and smaller every day. When we shut out other cultures and other nations, we deny ourselves the opportunity to see things from other perspectives and learn about other ways of doing things.

In light of our coming Memorial Day, let me share a college experience. For one summer, I had a Japanese roommate. We got to talking, and discovered that he had a grandfather who bombed Pearl Harbor while my grandfather was there on the US side. A creepy coincidence for sure.

Obviously we had no ill feelings for each other, since we didn't exist at the time. What we did agree on was that war is bad, and it's unfortunate that anyone had to die from either side, regardless of who was right or wrong.

We were both proud of our own nations and cultures, but even more proud of the fact that our generation would think more on a global level, less you and me, more us, less yours and mine, more ours.

That's the kind of thinking that I come from. Everyone has a certain allegiance to where they come from and what they are, but seeing the bigger picture at the same time always makes you and your world a better place in the long run because without barriers, anything is possible.

Hey, Disney figured this stuff out a long time ago when they opened Epcot Center.

I don't even know the words to agree with you as strongly as I feel, Jeff. Cheers. And yes, the foreign workers are a large part of the backbone of that park, working harder than the college-slack-offs who're interested in a party summer job. Now, that's not meant to offend, because there are no good stereotypes and I know dozens of people on both sides that don't fit that image, but the truth is that a lot of them do, too.

Sheesh, all I did was ask what time they play the national anthem now, that's all... (Thanks Rob!)
