Snoopy Overkill

Is anyone in agreement with me that the Snoopy theme is starting to become an annoyance and overkill throughout the park. It seems each year, more and more things get "Snoopy-ed". Cedar Point Cinema aka Good Time Theater (with all Snoopy shows), all the Snoopy junk in the gift shops, Snoopy images and theme all over the park and in the Resorts, Joe Cool Club, and now the Summer Sucktackular is the Snoopy Summer Sucktackular. I was all for dumping the Bearinstien Bears for the Peanuts in 1999 with Camp Snoopy kids area, but it is now becoming just as bad as Six Flags with the DC Comics theme. Anyone agree??

I can agree completely. Last season at Joe Cool's I got asked more times than I could ever count " What's with all the snoopy stuff, snoopy hasn't been popular for years?". I do understand the classic status of peanuts, don't get me wrong, but the only people who SEEM to really enjoy all of the Snoopy fanfare are really little kids and middle aged adults. At least with Six Flags DC characters it's something that is still very much a contemporary thing. For the kids I think it's great but there is a line to be drawn.

I think they do it for little kids and their middle age adult parents. Attracting families in that age group is important. I don't really mind it (I'm a middle age adult), and at least CP doesn't have something stupid like "Snoopy's Dog House - The Ride".

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.
It's great to live in Ohio!

I disagree I really like the snoopy theaming I think it is what CP needs (a mascot and a bit of theming). I'm sorry but I don't care what anyone else thinks I like all the Snoopy stuff.

Here's a thought: families with young kids and middle aged parents (like my family) tend to contribute to a good in-park, per-capita spending number. Teens and twenties without kids (like I used to be) don't spend diddly squat in the park in comparison.

Example: With the kids, I tend to buy 1-2 meals in the park ($40-$80), a couple of on-ride photos of the kids ($20), a souvenier or four ($20-$40). Plus, with my kids so little, a place to nap within walking distance ($200/night) is key. When I'm by myself or with friends for a non-kiddy-ride coastering trip, I bring a lunch in a cooler, buy a beer or two ($10), and maybe an order of boardwalk fries ($4).

So, it seems to me that the Peanuts thing makes sense.

Yes, families with kids are the biggest per-capita spenders. But, they will be in attendance regardless whether you have Snoopy themed kids areas, shows, and suvenirs, or not. Even before the 1999 season when the theme was added, Cedar Point was popular with young families. There will still be plenty for small children even if you don't have the Peanuts marketing. Seems like they are fixing what is not broken. How does it contribute??

How about adding more Peanuts characters?!? I grew up watching/reading Peanuts and, as a middle aged (UGH!) ,thirty-something adult CP employee, I'd like to see more of the rest of the gang!!

Have you ever just sat and really thought about what you are thinking?

I say they remove Snoopy from the logo and replace him with Pigpen :)

You are asking how the Peanuts contribute to Cedar Point? Snoopy is #8 on the most recognized people/characters in the world. (The Mouse is #1). The use of these characters at Cedar Point bring in a substantial amount of revenue. They have also proven to bring families, that normally would not come to the park.

The idea that there is a lot to do for families in the park can be a purely perceived notion. Even though it is perceived by many that Cedar Point has a lot a things to do for families, the huge arsenal of thrill rides sometimes overpowers that. The use of such a popular group of characters through themeing of rides, entertainment, merchandising and games clearly gives the idea that Cedar Point truly is for everyone. I think that the Peanuts characters do this much better than the Berenstain Bears ever did.

You can also look to the fact that the addition of "Snoopy Rocks!" last season proved to be a big hit for the park, nearly every show was sold out throughout the entire summer, and most likely will be again this summer. The Peanuts are a gold mine for Cedar Point, and not just monetarily speaking, they do a world of good in marketing Cedar Point for those looking for something other than a record breaking coaster.

I heard they were building "Snoopy's Upside-Down Doghouse" over by Wicked Twister for next year.

families with kids ... will be in attendance regardless

Actually, we had a discussion last year that seemed to generate the consensus that PKI is viewed as a more family-friendly park than the "ultra-thrill" CP. (I'll note that I was one of the naysayers, as my family finds itself fully entertained for days in a row at CP.) I'd search for it, but am feeling lazy. In other words, if a family is only going to visit one park in a season, and the dirving distances are not ridiculously different, a family may well prefer to go to PKI.

Heck, I'm even planning to take the kids to SFWoA to see the dolphins, etc. once this year. I wasn't going to, but had so much fun at SFMW's shows earlier this season that I wished I had the kids with me. Not enough to chip in for plane fare to San Francisco, but enough to drive an extra hour to Aurora.

edit: I'd go to the upside-down doghouse, as long as the red baron is rocking in a rocking chair attached to the ceiling. ;)

I hate the snoopy stuff.

How about this....THE SIMPSONS

Okay, so it won't happen (in accordance with a "family-friendly atmosphere) but wouldn't that be sweet?

I think that those of you expecting something huge and cool will be disappointed. There isn't a single logical reason to pour a footer and enclose it in an ugly wall for six months.

:O, never insult bear country!! I was so dissapointed when they removed it for snoopy. That was one of the greatest things I loved at CP. (Next to the sky slide and Jr.Gemini that is.)

Why couldnt they keep the Barenstein Bears and add the Peanut's characters?

Six Flags sports Looney Tunes and DC Comics. Heck, they sport Cartoon Network as well.

Come on, HATE the Snoopy theme? It may not be everyone's #1 choice for a mascot, but i can't imagine it detracting from anyone's enjoyment at the park.

ONE freeway stamp a day... ONE

I beat myself up every year that I didn't get a picture of my son with his hands up on the "Woodstock Express" for the first time a few years ago. It was the first time he raised his hands on any coaster, and he looked SO proud. However; I JUST didn't have the cash to buy the picture. He was SO upset. The next year I bought one of him with his hands up on it, but it just wasn't the same. Errr, sometimes we parents just don't think. (I should have brought extra cash!)

As having been originally from Cincinnati, I know that I would consider PKI much more of a family park than Ceder Point. PKI's childrens area, "Hanna-Barbera Land" is much than Ceder Point's children area. Hanna-Barbera Land was rated the number one children area in the country for the past two years. Now I don't know if that is including the Nickelodeon area but I remember having so much fun in Hanna-Barbera Land. One thing that got me hooked to roller coasters, is a ride called the Beastie. It is a roller coaster that looks like Wildcat in shape with the over and under stuff, but is a solid wood coaster like Mean Streak without the roughness of Mean Streak. It is like an intermediate step between kids areas and more powerful, for lack of a better word, coasters. Kings Island also has less intense coasters, like Adventure Express, a mine ride with a ride simiilar to Gemini, and the Racer, an out and back coaster with one side facing forwards and one facing backwards. This is what makes PKI a much better family park. However, I think that the snoopy stuff is fine for Ceder Point to attract families since most of the rides there are rather intense.
