I do not ride MAntis often, but two instances in the past year I have had a snake slither out of the lagoon, into the line, and back into the lagoon. Those suckers are pretty large.
First rollback=opening weekend '09
When I read the initial post I had to laugh. I couple of summers back I was at the Point with friends and we decided to go into town and went to that marina area to get some pictures of the park. I was walking ahead of my friends and happened to look down and see a big ball of snakes slithering together. I screamed like a girl and ran. They still laugh at me for it.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
Josh M, snakes are venomous, not poisonous. ;)
I love them. Along with any other reptile. Infact I think herpatology is the field I want to get into.
Now if that were spiders, I would be running the other way screaming. :)
edit: Wow I must have been tired last night. Because re-reading my post today, I couldn't even understand it.

I love Monkeys! I love Monkeys!
I would say it could be a Diamondback, but from what I understand that species is mainly contained to the Mason, OH area... ::rimshot::

Adam they are beautiful! Are they all corn snakes? I thought about getting one before. It looked like your Oreo, and it was so tiny at the time. Have they ever bit you?

I'm glad to know we aren't the only ones this happened to, Vince. They need to put a sign up or something on that marina.
So is it or isn't it a Lake Erie Water Snake? It sounds like there is some disagreement there.
TTD 120 mph, we have black rat snakes where we're from, and I initially thought that might be what it was. The head looked different, though, and I didn't think they could swim... I've read some online about interbreeding between the various species up there, so maybe we saw some kind of a hybrid snake.
Strange. The concept of a "mating ball" of snakes is quite possibly the grossest thing I've encountered today.
OH it's quite interesting to say the least. Red Sided Garter snakes in Canada have the most amazing show of this phenomenon. So the snake in question could very well be a mix hybrid. Hard to tell since I wasn't there. As for if it could or could not swim....all snakes can swim (even the fat ones).:)
And no Jesz they're King Snakes. Except for Sandy who is a Western Hog Nosed snake. They've all bitten me at one point in time but Sandy is slightly venomous (rear fanged) and one time got me pretty good on the middle finger. It swelled to the size of my thumb. But it didn't hurt. Felt like my hand was asleep for about an hour.

King snakes is what I meant. lol. How did you buy a venomous snake?
"You wanna, you gotta, you hafta hold on, Cedar Point...HOLD ON!"
Jesz,
If you dislike spiders, be aware around Cedar Point. They are everywhere. Our hotel room at Breakers had them everywhere outside. You can see some impressive webs around there. We have been to Breakers numerous times, and its common to see some decent sized spiders crawling around.
Then the scariest run in with a spider yet. Walking by Maverick during an ERT where there are those lights that hang over the path. There was a spider that was just hanging....about face level. Bigger than a half dollar.
She almost walked in to it. I was like batman and saved her though.
I am scared of snakes, and hearing the original posters story makes me re-evaluate wandering around the peninsula. I would also be scared ****less if I seen a snake in the Mantis ride platform if it was big. Define big, bigger then a garden snake.
I bet Bayshore has them on their water area too......
Thanks for the tip Ryan. :) I have noticed the many spiders in different queues too. Especially MF's.
They were pretty decent sized - 3 feet to maybe 5 feet. Avoid long, rocky outcroppings where you have to carefully climb and are thus stuck if you see snakes. Now that we have our photos from across the bay, I can guarantee you, I will never, ever go to that marina again. :)
No, it was the one across Sandusky Bay, looking towards Cedar Point. I'm not all that familiar with the area, so I'm not sure which marina it was. We drove to Sandusky's downtown-looking area, and parked near a marina there. We walked from the parking lot along the marina, where there was a sidewalk. Beyond the sidewalk was a long, thin rocky outcropping that we walked to the end of. The snakes were heavily concentrated along the outcropping, but we saw a few along the water's edge even when we got back to the sidewalk and parking lot. We never saw a single one at Cedar Point, but we didn't get too close to the water in the park.
Here's where we were on Google maps' satellite:
Looks like you were on the Meigs street pier between Battery Park Marina (owned by CP) and the Sandusky Yacht Club.
There're tons of water snakes at all the marinas around here. But they seem to know I don't mind them since I don't see them that often. :)
Liked the 3 kings and the hognose. I used to have a collection until the condo association got wind of it. Sold them at the monthly Columbus and Cleveland snake shows. Next shows are July 18 (Columbus) and July 19 (Cleveland).
