Should CP revive xmas in the park?

Walt, Do you have the link to the video of the sleigh ride?

Well, I would for sure go. But like the majority of the people are saying, it probably wouldn't work out. It would be kind of neat walking through Cedar Point in zero degree temperatures, but it would be very cold. & with Lake Eerie I'm sure it would be rather windy as well.

But, just imagine if it was 35 degrees with a light snow at night? With the Top Thrill Dragster's light shining on the top hat. Sounds pretty nice to me.

& for the Space Spiral dropping at midnight for new years, it's a nice idea. But what if (even though i know it wouldn't happen) Top Thrill Dragster launched at midnight for new years. that would be quite the momment.

I still can't see this happening for Cedar Point anytime soon though.

I don't know why so many of you just act like it's so impossible to do this. As far as it being too cold, isn't that the point? Christmas at the park wouldn't really be Christmas at the park if it wasn't cold? That is part of Christmas is it being cold. I keep reading there won't be employees and CP wouldn't make enough money. PKI has done it along with the lights at the zoo and others as people have mentioned before. I know you can't really compare the lights at the zoo to an amusement park but you know what I'm getting at. So how did PKI get employees? It's not impossible at all, you just have to plan and advertise and put forth a good effort. I'm not saying it will simply be a success if that happens, but there is definitely a chance of it. I would love to see it.

Sorry if it seemed like I jumped down anyones throat, I apologize if it seemed that way :)

PKI gets employees the same way they get them in the summer without having employee housing.

I don't think that this will happen anytime soon either, but I do think it would be fun though and hope that some day it is feasible. Yes, being on a barrier beach in Lake Erie on a cold windy winter day can be challenging at best, but I don't go out in these conditions if I don't have to. However, I have spent many pleasant winter days on the lake and beaches, it isn't always as bad as one might think. Heck, Camp Snoopy is so hot most of the season, it's probably relatively nice there in the winter. I always thought it would be easier to stand in line for woodstock in the winter than in the summer (I hate being hot). It wasn't too long ago that parks closed after Labor Day and the Halloweekends thing was new and many parks jumped on this bandwagon. Now CP has been boasting what a success this has been.

In the same spirit as "Browns and the Force", I too want to emphasize that I hope I didn't seem like I was jumping down throats too. Some of the responses led me to think that maybe I stepped on some toes. :)

I love how everyone who disagrees with this is disagreeing with their main thesis being that it is too cold out. Its like, if its too cold for you and you can't handle it, thats absolutely fine, so just don't show up for the event.

Less then 20 miles away in Port Clinton, they have the Willie Walley drop or whatever its called. I went there this year and they had food, activities; people were all over the place. Think they were hoping to break 10,000 people this year or something. This idea that started from nothing, like 8 years ago or around there, has now gained international, thats right international attention, from around the world. People came from all over the place just to see some fish drop. As the movie says, "If you build it, they will come." If cp puts some money into this and makes it nice, people will come from all around reguardless if its cold out or not.

People say, "well they already tried that and it failed once." Did Cedar Point really put any money into that. I went that year many times and I can't remember ever seeing any information about it. Plus who would go if you open up one ride and then give a sleigh ride, lol. Of course it failed. However if cp wants to make this nice, advertize, open some stuff, and put some money into it; the event could definately take off.

Once again, my input disappeared into cyberspace! If interested, stop by by on your way to CP and see Wylie the Walleye, that was the main point of my lost comment. It is at the SR 53 exit off SR 2 near Port Clinton. Enjoy! 36 days to go....

Hey guys. I just recently came into posession of the "1994 Cedar Point Christmas in the Park Brochure"

http://www.rollercoasterfreak.com/CP_Brochures/1994_Christmas.html

It's nothing spectacular, but I thought you might be interested.

Jason, that's cool! I bet you may get a pretty penny for that on ebay. Doesn't look like they offered much, no wonder it only lasted a year. I wish I knew about it though, I probably would have went. I consider myself local to CP but heard nothing about it on TV, radio, etc. Although with a 3 year old, a newborn and fresh out of grad school, I wasn't thinking about CP much in '94 (no extra $$).

Here is a link to the walleye event in PC that I meant to post earlier if you are curious about it. I haven't been there, but we may attend this year, looks like fun. Sorry if this was already a thread...see ya in 35 days, can't wait anymore!

Christmas's ideas was built around staying in from the cold. Not being out in it.

Sky ride themed to a ski lift.

I nearly froze to death on the ferris wheel on sweetest day last year, I can't imagine being on the sky ride in the middle of December.

The day they build a giant dome around CP and keep it open year round, I'll be more then happy to go for Christmas.

It's a nice thought, but I don't know how enjoyable freezing to death outside, let alone riding anything outdoors would be. I nearly freeze walking to my car in the winter time.

There are places in Michigan that do Christmas themed events outside. One that comes to mind is Christmas at Crossroads. The event is at Crossroads Village in Genessee County (near Flint). Christmas is the most attended season at that park now. Of course the park isn't about riding rides, but Cedar Point at Christmas time wouldn't have to be either. They have plenty of buildings that could be used. At Cross Roads they put their carousel into a heated enclosed pavilion so that people can ride without freezing. They have local church choirs sing inside buildings, they have gift shops open, special shows, sleigh rides, etc... It is a very nice event that Cedar Point could definately do if they thought that it would be profitable enough.

...and enjoy the rest of your day at Cedar Point, The Am-aaaa-zement park!

I'm not for or against the idea, because I don't even think of traveling up for Halloweekends, I can't drive.

The Beach Water park makes a pretty big smash with it's Christmas event. There isn't much to do, therefore it doesn't take a lot of staff. It would definitely be local thing.

At the Beach they have a makeshift toboggan, a very small ice skating rink, hot chocolate, and a carousel running. They put some paddle boats in the lazy river too. I don't think the attendance was that much less than PKI's winterfest, even though they are right next to each other.

They're not that much of a themed park either, there is a fake palm tree here of there and that's about it. Just my 2 cents.

Summer was made for a Cedar Point day~

Weather isn't the problem. There are plenty of winter events that succeed despite cold weather. A big issue is that there aren't enough people willing to drive that far for that type of event. If Cedar Point were 10 miles outside of Cleveland instead of 60, I bet a Christmas event would have much more a chance. Then again, even if there was a population base to target, there are other factors (staffing, maintenance, etc.) that would limit the size of the event.

I think that if the park thought it would be worth-wild, we wouldn't be having a "revive Christmas in the park" thread. ;)

If this was November 5 or something I might be a little interested. But it's now April and the first signs of Spring are showing up (WARM WEATHER). CP is opening full force in just a few weeks and Christmas is the last thing on my mind.

Imagine your favorite tv show. You've been through it all. The ups, the downs, the crazy coincidences and then bang! They tell you what it's all about. Would you be happy? Does it make sense? How come it all ended in a church? - Joker

Hey Guys! The only reason this thread was revived was because I drove by Wylie the Walleye the other day when I stopped in at the visitors center near Port Clinton to, well, I had to...they have the cleanest restrooms in NWOH. Anyhow, I remembered the comment made by ejh1701 and I took a picture hoping that I could share it with you all. The folks inside gave me the web address which I provided instead. Anyhow, it's all about economics not about what a handful of us fans think (I guess it also depends on how big the handful is). I don't mind the cold and think there are too few things to do in the winter in NWOH as it is. I would welcome another festive activity and yes I would ride a coaster in the winter! This is not much different than sliding down an ice chute at 40+ mph or skiing down the side of a mountain at 60 mph in the cold. Maybe CP could construct an indoor amusment park instead!

huh?

Let me get another beer and read that again.

Mayor, Lighthouse Point

Mr Scott, I don't think getting another beer will help much. But as long as you are up, please get one for me too, if you don't mind, I just finished my last! Thanks!
