My husband and I went with another couple to Cedar Point on Saturday. Originally, we had planned on spending Sat. Night in a cabin at Bayshore Campgrounds and go to the park on Sunday, but the weather forecast said the weather on Saturday would be better, so we rearranged our plans.
We arrived at the park from Flint around 10:30. It was nice to have 280 south open again, as last summer we had to do some detouring in Toledo. Hopefully someday the big bridge will finally be completed.
We drove up the Chausee and drooled over the nice houses. Saw that the front parking lot was really crowded...great. We parked back in the SC lot, which only had 2 or 3 rows full.
Our first ride was Magnum, which was a 15 min wait. We sat in the back for a great ride. Walking to the back of the park, we noticed Gemini was only running one side, so decided to save that ride for later, since we wanted to race. The back of the park looked really nice. The trees and atmosphere are really relaxing back there. I can't wait to ride Maverick. We will have to return later in the season.
Our friends had never been on Skyhawk before, and thought it looked pretty lame. The wait was only one cycle, and we were on. THEY LOVED IT, and were absolutely terrified by the first swing. It was pretty funny. We rode it two more times throughout the day.
As we came back to the front of the park, it became apparent that it was PACKED. I have never seen wait times as long for the park as I did that day. Granted, I try to go early in the season, but still. The sign for Corkscrew said 3/4 hour, Gemini 3/4 hour, Raptor 2 hours, Millenium Force 2 hours. Luckily, most lines were only 1/2 - 3/4 of what the sign said (sign for Millenium said 2 hours, and we were on in 1 1/2). We didn't want to waste our only day at the park, so we did end up waiting for awhile for alot of the coasters. The crews were awesome though, and pretty much every line was constantly moving. I especially applaud Iron Dragon's crew, as it seemed like the whole unload/load time for each train was maybe 20-30 seconds. Awesome hustle, and the ops all looked like they were really enjoying their job.
We had lunch at Johnny Rockets, and it was probably the worst experience of the trip. The 1/2 fries, 1/2 onion rings were sooo small, and around $4.00. The food was ok, but the guys of our group both ordered shakes, and there must have been something wrong with the machine or something, because they didn't arrive until probably 15 minutes after we were done with our meal. Our waitress was very good and attentive, and checked on us frequently (always without our shakes, but reassuring us that they were coming), but whoever was making shakes was slooooow. We saw our waitress go over to the shake person several times trying to get our shakes, but they were never ready. The food was very overpriced for what we got. Not eating there again. Seemed like you got more for your money last season?
For dinner we went to Macaroni's, and it was a pretty enjoyable meal. The four of us split a large pizza for $19.00. The slices were big, and we were surprised that it was actually a very good pizza. Much better than the cheapo pizza stores around Flint (Little Caesars, Hungry Howies, etc.). The actual pizza we had looked 100x better than the pizza on the front of the menu , so we were pleasantly surprised and happy.
The crowds at the park were disappointing (although it is awesome to see CP making some $$!), but the weather was pretty good. It was overcast the whole day, and sprinkled a few times, but not enough to close any rides that I noticed (other than the Sky Wheel and Sky Ride).
We stayed the night at Bayshore Campgrounds, in one of the their two bedroom cabins. It was pretty nice in there, and very reasonable, only $60. One big bonus is you get a full kitchen with full size fridge. They have a little store there too, which sells some food items, similar to CP's Camper Village store. All around, Bayshore was not nearly as nice as Lighthouse Point, but we didn't really want to spend that kind of $ for only one night. We will probably go back and stay at LHP later in the season. For a nice *cheap* place to crash for one night, we will stay at Bayshore again. When we want to really have a "nice vacation" (aka EXPENSIVE), we will stay at LHP.
Cheap is key. My 3 nights of camping was $44 last week. You can't even stay in a Michigan State Park for that kind of money.
We had a full hookup site at Bayshore last weekend for 3 nights with 4 people and it was still right around $100.
It costs that for one night at Camper Village and you can't have any ground fires. We happily drive the 5 mins to the park.
