Round and round...

Well, you know it's a slow news week when construction outside the park is more interesting than construction inside the park.

In case you hadn't heard, the roundabout is finally happening.

I love roundabouts. I'm not an idiot, so I know how to drive in them, and I also think they add a beautiful touch with the right type of landscaping. We have a lot around here (NE Ohio) that are quite artistic and add lot of...curb appeal. Pun intended.

I think this is a huge plus for the immediate area, and a great first step towards reducing congestion. Also pinching myself that the causeway thing is actually happening. Should be finished sometime around when the Browns make the playoffs again.

As I saw the title of this posting, all I have swirling in my head is that that lousy song by hair group Ratt.

As someone who also understands how to navigate a roundabout, and enjoy them when used correctly, I am somewhat skeptical on how well this one will work. Now I fully understand that typically a lot of data is collected before a project like this is green lit, and that data is used to decide what type of traffic control device is needed, but I am still surprised a roundabout is what they landed on for this very busy intersection.

shrugs

Funny enough, Epic Universe has a roundabout at their main entrance into parking so maybe this one will work just fine for Cedar Point and my lack of experience in this area is speaking volumes here.

I fear it will be a huge cluster**** on busy days (I'm looking at you Haunt Saturdays) because not enough drivers will know how to properly utilize it and it will make things worse.

Not knowing how to use a roundabout seems more like something angry old people shout about on Facebook than actual reality.

But like 99er said...

Don't forget about the 5 other roundabouts that are being planned for US6 between Sandusky and Huron!

Interesting to have them at both the Rye Beach highway ramps. Also, I have been wondering how they were configuring the one at Perkins Ave. I thought they were doing it along the front of Maples property, but I see rt. 6 will actually pass behind the Motel building. I had seen a For Sale sign on the Maples lawn last October. Wondering if they are going to be "eminent domained" out of business and demolished, or are they planning to stay as a Motel. They do offer Zenith Color TV.

It is all fun and games until the car ahead of you treats the entrance to the round about as a stop sign. Maybe I am just unlucky, but it happens pretty regularly to me.

I think the railroad being so close there would make it so that a round about would not work. Putting it behind the hotel makes sense to me as it gives more room for the people trying to cross the tracks when a train is there.

Does anyone know the time line for all of these?

Kinda surprised the Perkins Ave roundabout wasn't built to the west of the motel, keeping it from needing to go so far behind the motel.

Its offset due to a combination of allowing some extra space for those waiting for a train along with the tracks being on a ridge making the road grade from Perkins to Cleveland steeper than is allowed today. There are likely some better engineering solutions-and in a logical word CSX has to participate in the process like everyone else-but in this one railroads are allowed to ignore anything from any level lower than federal.

I guess, but what I am picturing in my head would still allow Perkins Ave to run-out once across the tracks to the roundabout, thus eliminating a steep grade and leaves room for traffic to back up if the crossing gates are down. Essentially what they are doing for the Camp Road roundabout pictured in slide 2 of the link above, but just straighten out Perkins Ave as it leads into the roundabout. My extensive background in roundabout design is what led me to these thoughts, after a couple of old fashioneds of course.

I'll miss people who are just learning how to drive manual transmissions stalling trying to get up and over the tracks after stopping. :)

I am astounded at how poorly everything in the Register is written. Bro apparently never took a journalism class.

Yeah! No more getting stuck behind idiots trying to turn left onto Cleveland Road.

Rye Beach Rd won't be too bad....there's a double roundabout on an overpass at a major destination near where I live and it's not bad at all.

Maples never opened in 2025 and I don't believe it opened in 24 either. I'm not sure what came of the sale. The drawing showing how Rt 6 gets rerouted seems to show them maintaining driveway access to the motel.

I'm with you on that, dude. A certain road you take to get to my college has THREE roundabouts. And holy crap the traffic flow is amazing. If there weren't any I'd probably take a year and a half to get from my dorm to Meijer because of traffic lights. Also let's not forget about going to other places around the area. It'll probably make getting to the Sandusky Sailing Club eaisier too. Bring on the roundabouts!

Work harder, seagulls! You need to push Cedar Point into the sun!

Go Falcons! You must go to Bowling Green? My kid graduated from there last year. I've VERY familiar with those roundabouts, yes they work very well. Love me some Frickers close to there, lols. Heard the new Jersey Mikes and Wingstop are getting slammed on game days. Good luck on your studies.
