Ride Operation Question

Several times while at Cedar Point, when people shake the station gates, the operators tell them not to shake them because it "makes the ride restart". I've heard that on rides like Mean Streak, MF and various others, does anyone know what it means?

the gates are part of the saftety system for the ride. each gate has a sensor, so when a guests shakes the gate, there is a chance the gate will open and then sensor will "inform the ride" of that, thus the ride will emergency stop. on some rides, the ride host must manually lock the gates, and if this isn't done, the trains will not dispatch, again part of the saftety system.

I believe the main ride this applies to is Wicked Twister since the train moves so fast through the station.

it applies to all the rides. even the water rides. when I worked shoot the rapids, one of the magnets for the gate broke and the gate flew open. the ride emergency stopped and it took quite a while for maintenance to come fix the gate. the guests were not too please, especially the ones stuck on the ride.

I also believe Wicked Twister has a "laser" system. While the coaster is running if that line is broken the ride will e-stop.

I know about the laser system, its the same kind that is used to keep people out of the way of factory robots. From what I could tell during a quick glance at the bars, the lasers can detect anything passing through larger than a centimeter.

Wicked Twister has a light curtain. If anything passes through it, it'll E-Stop the ride.

The same premises with the station gates, if the ride thinks that the station gates are open, then it will not allow a train to be dispatched and will stop the ride.

Yeah Twisters Light curtains can be really sensitive. We had a receipt break it once lol. I know its supposed to e-stop if you shake the gates really hard. I've never actually had it happen when i've been working though.

I once saw them have to reset twister because someone decided to take their shoes off after you guys were prepared to launch. And next thing you know it they had to reset.

If you break a gate, to the point that they have to replace it, it is a pretty hefty fine, a couple thousand dollars and some criminal charges as well.

Yep! We sure do have to reset if somebody takes their shoes off. Even though there are height requirements, we can have shoes on the platform in case somebody's foot kicks it into the low zone (which wouldn't feel good at all). I couldn't tell you how many times that has happened.
