Ride Areas...?

I know this is probably FAQ but I had...shall we say...an interesting experience last weekend, and it seems that variations I encountered were between park ride areas.

If I remember correctly...Isn't Area 1 everything from the Front Gate back to Millennium Force and Magnum XL-200, with everything else in Area 2? Or is there more to it than that?

(why do I even know that Area 1 and Area 2 exist?)

Magnum is in area 2. Area 2 is divided into zone 3 and 4. Zone 3 is Chaos/Troika/Super Himalaya, Magnum, Gemini, Camp Snoopy, GCA, etc. I believe both Mine Ride back to Mean Streak is Zone 4. I'm not sure about the division in area 1. I know its zone 1 and 2 but I don't know where the line is. I know MF and Mantis and Iron Dragon are zone 2 though and Raptor is Zone 1. Chris Fike is the Area 2 manager and I think Matt Ozoski is still Area 1. So now that I have given this dandy info, share your experience Dave! :)

Real simple: In general, Area 1 doesn't know the official policy on umbrellas (same as for crutches and canes). Area 2 does.

Don't be too surprised if the Cloo-By-Four comes out in Area 1 before long, if it hasn't already...although the person I talked to blamed the problem on what carnies call "green help." Looked more like red and blue help to me... :)

In 2000 area 2 was from Power Tower all the back the gemini Midway through Frontier Town and around to Thunder Canyon. Area 1 was everything else. This may have been changed since 2000.

Then why respond? Sorry, but that just bothers me when people do that. :)

Straight off cedarpoint.com

UMBRELLAS, CANES AND CRUTCHES are allowed past the entrance, but are not permitted on the rides. These items may be held by the Platform Host for the guest.

I never knew umbrellas were allowed up on the platfrom.

Yeah, we usually held them for guests, contrary to what we will do with most loose articles.

Same here. Umbrellas, canes and crutches are about it though. Anything else is going with you!

The wording in the Little Book of Paranoia (the 2002 Rider Safety Guide) is only slightly less accommodating...it says that the items can be left on the platform and the park can't be responsible for them. Last weekend I found out WHY umbrellas are permitted up to the platform, too: a full-size umbrella will NOT fit into any available locker. I imagine on MF one would have to surrender the umbrella, cane, or crutch when walking past the unload station. But you gotta get past the entrance host first! --Dave Althoff, Jr.

Lol maybe its just me but I didnt understand one word of that Ridman! ;)

Okay, I'll offer a glossary:

Cloo-By-Four: A bit of lumber, of some unspecified length, 1-5/8" by 3-5/8", used for knocking sense into the clueless.

Green help: Carnival term for the inexperienced new-hire picked up locally to help out for the current date. At Cedar Point the equivalent term seems to be "Ride Pride".

Red and Blue help: Normal staff and foremen respectively. But you knew that already.

Is there some logical reason this thread turned to senseless insults? Thats a bit uncalled for. Just becasue you dealt with a person who wasn't familiar with all the rules doesn' mean you need to insult all of us.

Insults?? (user pages up and down the thread to be sure) Senseless insults? I don't see any of those. I saw at least one senseless operator, but that was about it.

What I did notice on the day in question was that in Area 2, EVERYBODY knew the policy, and in Area 1, almost nobody did. The facial expression I saw on the person I talked to in the Ops office was one of sheer stark horror when I mentioned my experience on a particular ride that happens to be in Area 1. Knowing how the park likes to over-react to such things, my expectation is that memos and meeting agenda items (the figurative Cloo-by-Four) would probably result.

I still don't see the source of Lyn's complaint. Either that or somebody deleted something offensive... :)

--Dave Althoff, Jr.

I was thinking the exact same thing Dave! :) I paged up and down this thread too! I'm sure, at minimum, something about the policy was printed in the weekly park operations booklet that goes to all the rides for everyone to read. Hopefully, everyone understands it now...
