I am sure hoping so! I love the concept of the ride and it looks really fun so I am hoping it isn't ruined by head banging! We shall see!!!
The other advantage that we will have with Maverick is that seats are only two wide rather than Mantis' four. The headbanging on Mantis is significantly worse, in my opinion, when seated (standing) in one of the two outside seats. The inside seats are much less severe.
Of course, another solution for me (and my ears) has been taking off my sunglasses! Not always a wise decision when in the front row of Mantis or Raptor early in the season at night.
Who ever said that they should make OTSRs like the restraints on fliers is dead on. I would love to see restrains like x-flight instead of traditional otsr's

I think a combination between the open effect with the new intimin restraints and the soft flyer restraints would be great. I think flyer restraints are a bit too restrictive to leave any sense of danger on the ride. Has anyone tried the restraints on X at Magic Mountain? They look adjustable to the point that it's impossible to have head banging. There has to be a medium between soft comfort and something that doesn't feel like a scuba outfit. As bad as the original arrow horse collars were, I could honestly say I'd take those over the ones on any B&M or Premier coaster. You'd think one of these companies would get it right by now.
I was the one that said they should be like x flight restraints. There has to be a way that they could make them of the same type of material but a little looser fitting so you could still get the airtime people love!
Ok, this is coming from my experience as a ice hockey goalie equipment maker, in a sport where people get banged around a lot...
Couldn't they use gel or airbags in the head/neck area of a restraint? Just put a durable material covering it so no one can puncture them. If these airbags can stand up to 100 mph pucks, sticks, and skate blades they should certainly hold up to an occasional earring and headbanging. Even an air pocket with a synthetic leather covering would work. The rest of the restraint can be made in the regular fashion with foam and urethane.
It's just a thought. But the companies probably won't do that because "it costs too much and most people don't notice!"
RF welding is very strong and airbags would definetely make the ride more confortable. I think I will do that on my own backyard rides when I get around to making a looper! :)
Now watch a company go out and patent this. Oh well I can't afford a patent right now anyways. I guess I just get to feel good if they do!
Have you ever had an airbag deploy on you??? Youch!! They are not soft! Gel might not be bad. I still like the idea of something that either fits to your body, like a flyer restraint, or no otsr ast all.
I can say this much, I am 39 yo male, 177 pounds, 5' 10" tall, and I work out 5 days a week. I am not a bodybuilder by any means, I am just FIT. I was at CP on 9/8&9/2006 and I almost could not buckle the belt on MF.

Not an airbag that deploys like a car, a molded airbag that in inflated all the time! LOL!!! That would hurt! Here is a picture...

And they are really comfy, I use them in my own equipment. The pucks just bounce off them and you don't feel a thing that way.
Here's a picture of the medical grade gel we use in our masks. It's a semi solid and can either work with or in place of foam. It absorbs the impact a lot better then foam IMO.
