Ok--so I see they decided to go with an OTSR. I am not so sure I like this. I understand they have had problems with MF and TTD bc of the Tbar, but I just think it makes the ride so much more enjoyable. Not only do you have the feeling that you are "free", but I have very rarely ridden a coaster with OTSR that I didn't bang my ears on. I am 5'2'' so I am know I am on the shorter end LOL. With all those sharp turns and banking corners, how couldn't your head bang? Just wondered what other people thought....
Intamin's OTSR is more excepting to our bigger friends and the fact that Maverick goes down 95 degree drop and through three inversions, OTSRs sound like a good idea.

The shoulder straps are thin.....I doubt you will have problems, and, like B&M, Intamin designs around the heartline, unlike Arrow.
hmmmm... Bang head against the OTSR or fall out of a seat due to the intensity of the ride.
Also. I Fell kind of bad for those who cant ride TTD and MF bacause their size does not allow them. Cedar Point isnt a "fat camp", its a Family Amusement Park. If you were a kid and your dad could not ride a rollercoaster with you because he was possibly to large to ride, how would you feel? Just curious.
Truth is that OTSR are more accommodating for many shapes and sizes. Why I support OTSR on a ride such as this, its a ride for the whole family due to its lower height requirement.

My dad might be in that situation if he doen't lose about 20lb in the next 9 months. He barely fit in MF in 2003 before the new restrictions and has mainained the same weight. Hopefully he loses the weight so that TTD can scare the **** out of him (TTD was down the 2 days he went).
Now I can proudly chant "We're No. 16!" Thank you Cubs for allowing me to live my dream.
I competely understand it fits more shapes and sizes. My sister was unable to ride MF last year but got on TTD ok? Must be just borderline for size for the restraint system. I dont understand why they cant make restraint systems like on flyers that are soft and fit snugly to the body.
As far as I'm concerned, there is no excuse for head-banging on a ride. I don't care what the current standards are. Not only is something like that bad for your health, it takes away the enjoyment of the ride. I'm really hoping these restraints do not have a pain factor to them. It's impossible to get much of a thrill from a ride when you cannot take your mind off the fact that you're getting whacked in the side of the head every couple seconds. If with new technology we could get coasters to launch over 100 MPH, we could surely come up with a restraint that is both accommodating and comfortable at the same time.
When I rode Stormrunner, I could only go once and had to take a break because of the head banging. Actually, for my height it was neck banging. I will be surprised if this ride is smooth enough not to cause this also...
The "free" space it leaves also lets me bang my shoulders into it. These restraints are either a love or hate thing. Obviously, I hate them. *** Edited 9/9/2006 4:10:15 PM UTC by Becca_Raptor***
There are so many quick turns in this ride that one can't help but wonder if they're going to be banged around.
However...........
If you go to the Maverick website, under the facts, then to news release you will find this comment, "it will hug the terrain as it twists and banks around hairpin turns with quick ""BUT SMOOTH" changes in direction.
All my life I've been an obese man trapped inside a fat man's body
This is exactly my feeling. It doesn't matter how smooth the ride is, if you have quick turns it is just natural that your head (and body) will not go in the same direction of the coaster immediately. Same principle if you are turning directions in a car. I cant remember the last OTSR that I rode that I didnt bang my head. It will be a big disappointment for me if this happens. Like I said, the new flyers have a soft vest like restraint system. i would much rather have that any day than banging my head.... that is to be saved for concerts LOL
Just press your head/neck against the OTSR (Left or Right side) the whole ride if head banging becomes a problem.
I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with headbanging on any ride. Corkscrew, Vekoma SLC's and Boomerangs...
I keep my head against the back and hold my neck in place. If you know when you're going to turn, and adjust, headbanging shouldn't be much of a problem at all.

While I've been able to compensate my position to avoid some head-banging on rides, it is not always avoidable. Even if I could control my body to avoid every painful moment of the ride, what fun is that? I don't want to concentrate on preventing my head from getting smashed throughout every transition of the track. I want to just sit back and enjoy the rush. It's hard to do that when I'm in pain.
As far as the intimin restraints are concerned, I'm sorry to hear they were painful on Stormrunner now, because I have only heard good things about them in the past. When I rode the Manhattan Express in Las Vegas, I was under the impression it would be a comfortable ride because the restraints were so far from my head. It turned out to be one of the worst head banging experiences of my life. B&M rides are usually pretty smooth in transitions, but I think most of their head-banging comes from the fact that your head is wedged between two huge pads. It's like they were hoping to give you a beating. I'm hoping Maverick will have the smooth B&M transitions with a restraint system that doesn't hurt. I guess only time will tell.
Mantis and Raptor provide severe ear pain when I wear sun glasses (with a strap, of course). Intamin T-Bar restraints are absolutely fantastic as opposed to the "horse collar" restraints.
At the same time, I still struggle to understand why Intamin cannot figure a way to use the T-Bar and still accommodate most of the larger riders. This is a simple matter of physics in terms of keeping the "mass" of the individual into the seat.
I have tried pushing my head back and holding it to one side. And like TTDragster said, who wants to concentrate on squeezing your neck muscles as tight as you can just to enjoy a ride?? i am 5 foot 2 in and have serious neck and ear pain after OTSR rides! I love mantis but OUCH!! Once or twice a day is enough to deter me... I would like to keep my ears for future use! I think the restraints should be made soft like X flight restraints but without the foot bar. JMO of course..
I rode Storm Runner tiwce and I didn't have any problem with head banging, but im 6'2". The only coaster I've had a head banging problem was on Mantis. And on Raptor it wasnt that bad at all. I doubt Maverick will have any head baning problems because it is a lot newer than Mantis, and im sure they've made OTSR a lot more comfortable.
