Park Closed Sept 10 & 11??

My family and I were planning to go to Cedar Point the weekend of Sept 10-12 to cheer a friend on in the Iron Man and enjoy a week end in the park. Any idea why CP would host a worldwide event like this and not open the park? Runners from all over are participating in the race. I just can't imagine why the park wouldn't be open with so many people coming from all over for this event. It seems like a lost chance to promote the park.

First of all they are only closed on the 10th and 11th. Second of all, this will be the 3rd year in a row they have shown those days to be closed to the public. The last 2 years Honda has had a buyout of the park. in 2009 however, Honda didn't sell enough tickets to the employees and at some point Cedar Point decided to open the park to the public for those days. Even at that they were some of the slowest days I've ever been at the park. I would guess Honda has asked to do the buyout again.

I know in past the park has been closed that weekend, but I thought that having an event like the Iron Man, they would open the park to all the people coming for the event. according to the Iron Man planner, there are a couple hundred participates already signed up. 200 people plus families plus event coordinaters plus support staff equals hundreds of people there that aren't allowed in the park! I just don't get it. My family would drive the 9 hours if we could go to the park for the weekend then watch the race.

Didn't they combine the Honda and Cleveland Clinic buyouts? Or am I mixing it up?

You can still go and cheer him on. The entire event does not take place INSIDE Cedar Point. So admission is NOT required. Each entry into the event receive two (2) tickets to Cedar Point, so if your friend does not want them, maybe you can have them.

If the park is closed for a private buyout, then that can't be done. And as I mentioned above, those that are participating in the event already get two free tickets. Since most people are coming to the event FOR the event, I would guess that most would not be interested in the park.

And is this really an Iron Man event? The website calls it Rev3tri and mentions nothing about Iron Man.

I see this as more of a triathalon then Iron Man, the Iron Man in Hawaii is much longer.

Well Ironman is an actual brand and it appears that this event at Cedar Point is not an Ironman.

I read somewhere in the itinerary for the triathlon about special events in the park that week for the participants and families. I wouldn't be surprised if those that are there for the event are given access to the park in some form or another, although I also wouldn't be surprised if they aren't.

I dunno, Chris, I could not find anything like that on the event website. I would think that if there are special events within the park for families, the 2 free park tickets for participants might cover that. I really think its going to be something that is 100% outside the park though, similar to what the Firelands Swim Club does every year at the end of the summer season on the Cedar Point beach.

I heard that this is actually all a big secret plan. The runners and event are actually all holograms so that the event takes focus off the park so they can bring in the supports for the 600 foot mega wood flying coaster.

The point of him running this event, which is an iron man distance event not an Iron Man because that is a copyrighted name, was to have another reason to go to Cedar Point. We live near Philadelphia and are Platinium Pass holders, and head out to Cedar Point 2 times a year, we were just looking for another reason to go ride. The Start finish line of the event is actually in the park. The start of the swim is right at Breaker's Beach and the finish line is schedule to be on Cedar Point poperty, the bike and running parts will both go over the causeway.

Where does it say that it is IN the park? The map on the website looks as if it starts/finish at the back of the park near Camper Village/Soak City. It is possible for the event to take place AT Cedar Point without being IN Cedar Point. You know that, right? The property is very large and has plenty of room to host an event like this without actually be inside the park.

Like I said, you can still come and cheer him on because the event website says that the best place to do this at is the "transition point" which will NOT be in the park, but rather a parking lot at Cedar Point. Ultimately, if the Finish Line does happen to be in the park, the event website states that family and friends of participants are not to be around the Finish Line area for safety reasons. And if you still want to visit the park, it IS open on Sunday. I don't see a problem here.

I can see the swim part go out into the lake and the run part head out on to the causeway...while as the finish being in Soak City's parking lot.

First things first, the event takes place on September 12, and the park is open to the public that day.

This is from the Cleveland.com article that I remember reading the info on a few months ago, and is what I was thinking about with my original comment:

In the days leading up the race, Edwards said Cedar Point plans to holda series of special events for triathletes and their guests, includingpossible evening openings of rides and other attractions. Eachparticipant will receive two complimentary tickets to the park thatweekend, he said, along with two shirts, a medal, and various athleticaccessories from Revolution 3.

[url][url]That link has a better map and shows now that neither the Start or Finish will be in the park.

The schedule does show a list starting on Thursday but nothing specific. I could see the park pulling out any events that they had planned themselves because of budget.

The breakers is not in Cedar Point. You can get to the hotel without going in the park.

Again, just because your on the property, doesn't mean you'll be in the park.

How are typical Sundays during Halloweekends in September? Somewhere in between Friday's greatness and Saturday's swarm?

Halloweekend Sunday crowds are usually light-moderate. The crowd is larger than Friday but not as bad as Saturday. Just be advised that crowds on Columbus Day weekend because crowds are huge (sometimes the largest of the season). Last year we went closing Sunday and crowds were pretty small: 45 minute wait Maverick, 30 Millennium 30 Dragster, 15 Raptor and pretty much everything else was walkons and the waits were pretty much non-existant later at night. The houses had about a half hour to an hour line.
