Overtime....

As we all know, Cedar Point runs queue lines down after the park closes instead of just kicking everyone out. But, do employees get overtime for working? Is it straight hours, time and a half, what?
Straight time.. There is no overtime for seasonal employee's with VERY few exceptions..

Also, what you have to realize is that even if their ride doesn't have a line at closing, the hours are still very long. I think my first week, when the park was still closing at 8PM, I got in 50-some hours. Most weeks in July and August were in the high 60's or low 70's. For my 13 weeks at the park, I worked 799 hours which averages out to 61.46 hours per week.

Having a line left at closing just tacks on a few more hours to what is already an insane amount! :) And like Red Garter Rob said, no OT...

I can't think of any exceptions, except if the employee happens to be in one of the handful of unionized positions such as is found in Maintenance or Landscaping.
My point exactly..

Anything over 40 hours was time and a half. There was overtime to be had, especially in the weeks right before opening. Didn't usually see any after opening day, but it happened on occasion - like working on the Breakers expansion in June, 1995.

Granted, landscaping (and maintenance in general) isn't the typical Cedar Point job. Five day / 40 hour work week (I rarely worked on the weekend, though there is a small crew that works on Sat and Sun) and set schedule, including regular breaks. Base pay is slightly higher, but there is no seasonal bonus and we paid union dues.

I think they consider the bonus reason enough to not give any extra pay for working 70 hours a week.

Gemini, you worked on the 95 expansion?

We helped with the landscaping around Breakers East - bringing the area up to grade, planting, and mulching. I don't know all the details, but I know the expansion was behind schedule and everything was being done at a faster pace ... and I remember shoveling a lot of soil :) I think it was July 4 before it was fully ready for the public, though some discounted rooms were had before then.

Usually, large landscaping projects for new attractions and such are done by contractors. I'm not sure what the deal was that year, but I know we spent a lot of time there.

O-ver-time.. What is this overtime?

My pay was 3.00 an hour with the bonus at .25 an hour. Summer of 1980 kids were dying to get work especially at CP. CP has some type of exemption from labour law because of the temporary nature of the employment perhaps? If someone knows the legals I would love to know!

Overtime doesn't apply to seasonal employment. Check the poster in your employer's lunch room next to the one about discrimination and workplace safety.

By law, seasonal employees are not subject to overtime because they are just that, seasonal. I'm not sure if it's a federal law or a state law. I'm going to go so far as to assume it's a federal law because when I was working for the HCMA aka the Metroparks here in Michigan, we didn't get paid over time either. But it is law that seasonal employees don't get overtime because their jobs are only set a certain number of months out of the year.

To get more technical, if memory serves it actually comes down to the number of consecutive weeks one works more than 40 hours. If a CP employee works 40+ hours per week from April to October that would be 28 weeks.

I think the cutoff is 32 weeks to still be considered seasonal. Don't quote me on that. In any event, beyond the cutoff would require benefits to be paid out, overtime, etc.

Most of the full time employees are salaried and thus may work 100 hours a week (some do) and not be paid overtime. When I went salaried I thought it was GREAT but after calculating my loss of overtime I realized I really got hosed. In my current job I think I make less than $5 an hour at some times of the year!

That's why I HATE salary, Chief. Pay me for the time I am there, not the time I am scheduled to be there. The 2 never match.

Thats why I am glad that I work on commision now! OT would put CP out of business and lots of folks would not be happy!
Commission is all good until you hit a slump. Car salesmen were making good money until 9/11 and then the market went in the toilet. I know a lot of guys that were eating mac and cheese for a while.
Overtime? HAHAHAHAHA good one.

Well I sell investments and my business is actually decent-good on a reletive basis. At least I can go out and find my customers. Car sales is a good way to learn selling!
It is federal law that overtime does no apply to seasonal amusement park employees. However in this case if the state declares that seasonals are required to recieve overtime then what the state says go. Same applies to minimum wage, the state can't undercut the government but if they say minimum wage is going to be $10.00 an hour then is overrides what the federal law says. Nonetheless I think OT would be bad, we'd all be cut to 40 hour work weeks with no overtime and be making less money then if we worked at straight time for 70. It's not a big deal.
