Absolutely rediculous! This has to be one of the dumbest rules ever set in motion at an amusement park. The neighboring houses in that area are well aware of what they chose to live by when they purchased the property, just as some of you have already pointed out, and therefore to complain and whine about traits that are normal of any amusement park is ignorant. My unreal sugguestion to this problem? Invest in ear plugs folks and minimize acts of indiscretion in the backyard ;)
It seems to me that the 12 lane freeway would be making more noise then a few screaming people. Obviously I don't live there so I have no idea. I'm not sure where the ride is in relation to the homes that are complaining about the noise. I guess we would just have to experience it for ourselves.

Sound travels in a straight line, so sound from above would travel more easily to the houses than would road traffic, presumably, as most neighborhoods that border expressways have natural sound barriers.
Not to mention the fact that you're comparing apples to floppy disks.

I still don't see this as an issue. From the video, it seems like all the people complaining are across the freeway - not the people that live right next to it. I guess that might just be a coincidence, but that's what the video implies.
A max of four people screaming several times an hour can't be all that bad. Not everyone is going to scream, not everyone will scream continuously for the ride duration, the ride most likely doesn't operate non-stop, and the ride isn't always going to have four people on it. Its not like these people live in a nature preserve or something. They live at a highway intersection. They're just complaining to complain.
What are the operating hours of this ride?
The whole backyard privacy thing is a joke.
This is almost the same as when residents were complaining that they could see the airtime hills on Rita: Queen of Speed and made the park paint a portion of the hills green to match the trees. While I dont completely agree with the residents in both cases, they have their right of opinion.

As a side note, however, Scandia is not a theme park like Cedar Point.
I surprised nobody has jumped on this!:)
Gilly, just so ya know, CP's not a theme park.....it's just an amusement park.:)

The hills on Rita are actually brown. :) Alton knows they can't build over the tree line or planning won't approve the ride. They came from Intamin that color. Alton's surroundings are like night and day compared to this family fun center too. I was amazed there was a theme park there. Its literally in the middle of rolling countryside. You can't even tell there are coasters in the park until you're at them. Its a freaky - but cool - feeling.
Unfortunately for the residents, I don't see this park/mini putt-putt/batting cages/Goodtimes copy cat removing the coaster. Unless business declines so much because of the local residents complaints? What was the price tag? Is the price enough to keep it around? Or tear it down and apologize?

^^Oh brown! I could have sworn I read green.....dont know why I cant remember something as simple as that.:) And curse Screamscape for getting the story wrong! They said that people were complaining about the track and made them repaint it.
Just add another chock to screamscapes ever popular credibility.:)

I think people complained about the color when Alton proposed the ride, but it was done before manufacturing began.
mk - its a sky swat, not a coaster.

Corkscrew, right next to Rita, is painted two colors for the same reason and its been there since the 80s. Alton knows about their height restriction. Its the sound they keep getting fined for.
^ what I was saying though was that AT had chosen one color and the residents didnt' like it because it didn't blend enough, so AT had to change the colors of the hilltops.
I may be very wrong about this, but that's what I remember gathering about it.

A friend sent me a video of this story today:)
Its nice to see the general manager has a sense of humor about it - at least to the news. He's taken a great attitude towards the whole thing.
What a trooper. He just wants to have a giant thrill ride in his neighborhood family fun center. At least he's eating up the free publicity. :)
After seeing that video, I support the neighbors' position even more.

Holy Cow! I knew exactly what you were talking about when you said the A&W burned down! I grew up at 21.5 and Van Dyke! I now live in Lansing, but Utica will always hold a special place in my heart, so much so, I designed the signature sign for the City for my senior project at MSU. It's on the corner of M-59 and Van Dyke. Take a look next time your in town. Lansing is growing on me, as I am now only 1.5 hours from Michigan's Adventure, and about 3 from CP!
