Chief, I see your point. BUT, just about everywhere has that weather issue. And most of the places I go, they do close down things in the winter. The goal of this sign(what this thread about) was to get more TOURIST's to go downtown. All I think people are saying is why, there's nothing to do or see.
Plus the firehouse, is at least 100 yards off the main road, isn't it. Put the sign at the light at Cleveland and causeway!
Of the advertisements, 4 will be for downtown, the rest will be for hotels or food. Who else would pay?

I know this isn't the place for this, but given the subject matter...
I was just contacted regarding a position with a company in/near Cleveland (440 area code), though I don't know the company (I'm a mech. engineer). Compared to, say, the Metro Detroit area, what would I expect from Cleveland if I were to live there?
Brandon
^ Do you mean as far as pay goes? Weather? Traffic? Cost of living?

Exactly. :)
Well, primarily cost of living, weather and so forth. If you know what I'd be making as an eng, that's great too.
Brandon
Expect about the same weather, plus more lake effect snow on the east side.
You'll make exactly seven dollars.
I'm approx. 45 mins. from Cleveland but I know a few people that live closer to the city and it's not really all that bad. Currently a gallon of gas is hovering around 3 bucks, a loaf of bread is about $1.50 and a 1/2 gallon of milk is around $1.40.
A large number of people are taking the early retirement in this area from the Lordstown plant so i'm guessing we'll see a decline in spending and a rise in bad driving (as if it wasn't bad enough already). On top of that, the Delphi situation remains up in the air.
If I had the chance i'd definitely go south. NC, SC, GA for instance. That's where the real growth is at the moment.
Your weather is going to be about the same in Cleveland as it is in Detroit. SUCKS! Possibly even a bit worse because Cleveland gets a large amount of lake effect snow.

Seven dollars... okay, so as long as I can find a house for $25,000, I'll be all set then?
That's about what I expeceted. Thanks for the input. As for going south, I doubt it. I'm in the process of obtaining work at a defense contractor in Iowa at the moment, and this phone call regarding Cleveland came out of nowhere. I figure I'll check it out and see if I get an offer I can't refuse. Otherwise, I'll be headed to the plains.
Thanks again.
:)

I was going to say $7.25 so you can splurge and buy one that's around $27,500!

So where are you going to get the other 24,993?

Ha-ha, John. In case you can't tell, I'm resisting the urge to make a distasteful "mother" joke.
;)

Oh, you wanted what you'd make *per hour?* I was giving you the total you'd ever make. ;)
Nah, I work in Cleveland as an IT Engineer and I get paid decently. There are jobs to be had around here because all the smart people are heading to Columbus.
Thats funny because Columbus has done nothing but export dumb people since 1870.

Sandusky is never going to be a "big city" because of the nature of the City. In the winter it is like a college town in summer. Many of the restaurants barely stay alive during winter so they need to make their money, as does CP, for 4 or 5 months a year. The new jobs coming to town are low paying service jobs while the blue collar jobs (like at Delphi) diminish. All of that does not support building a big entertainment district that would struggle for attention during the cold, blustery winter months.
This is a very valid point, and I can not argue against it. The winter is dead, thanks to no CP. However, if Sandusky did some things, it'd help.
A New Years Celebration? Concerts? WinterFest in Downtown?
Those are random ideas thrown out, but if Sandusky worked upon them, winter might not be so dead.
Hell, I know it's in downtown, but the mall on 250. Expand that to a much bigger/greater mall, and that would attract people in.

The population of Sandusky is what it is and until they either draw residents from the bigger cities or draw new business opportunities that will bring new residents then growth will be stagnant.
I lived in Sandusky for 4 years and I wasn't real keen about going out during the winter. Certainly not for any particular lenght of time. Yes, many cities deal with cold climates but Sandusky gets the wind whipping off the lake with no real significant structures to stop it which makes if feel colder than downtown Cleveland.
Frankly, I am surprised about the number of restaurant chains that have come into Sandusky/Perkins in the last 8-10 years. Perhaps that foreshadows things to come but I am pessimistic. Mall expansions happen all the time. If the mall owners thought it was feasible I think it would have been done already. The fact of the matter is that I was in Sandusky in February and took my kid to the mall several times during the day and the employees outnumbered the customers 2 to 1, at least.
Winter sports are limited to ice fishing and cross country skiiing. There are no hills/mountains for downhill skiing.
What amazes me is that all these new restaurants and hotel/waterparks can find employees. I heard recently that Cedar Fair was sending it's HR folk to Brazil to recruit for winter help at Castaway Bay. That tells me that the workforce is drying up in Sandusky.
What could really change all of this? A casino. That is why Cedar Point keeps it's name in the game, not that it will happen in Ohio anytime soon.

I'll stand by your side on this. I always believed Ohio should legalize gambling. Sandusky would be one of the best spots in the state.

Whoa, I don't advocate for or against casinos in Ohio. I don't even live there. I am saying that casinos would change the dynamic of Sandusky...one way or the other.
I am a proponent of casinos in Florida. The Federal Government opened the door when they allowed Indian Tribes to build casinos. We have the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Tampa and near Ft. Lauderdale.
My feeling in our case is why not let private entities build casinos too, tax the heck out of them, and recapture some of that money going to the Indians?
Is there some kind of morale highground to take by saying we let the Indians do it by the State isn't involved? I don't think so. In that vein, don't get me started on the Ohio Lottery.

Only issue with the casino. it would be seasonal also. If they gave one to Sandusky, Cleveland would most likely have one. Where's the money going to come from. Stop me if I'm wrong but I don't see too many people within 50 miles of Sandusky with enough extra cash to burn. Detroit already has plenty of casino's in it's area. Cleveland would keep it's own people.
Casino's draw more from locals than anywhere else. If people travel, they just goto Vegas.
