I don't know much about their history, but they do not work anymore. My assumption is that they let them wear out and removed them. Sadly, this has been the fate of a number of interesting things around the park. I think it would be cool to get them working again.
I always thought those lights were suppose to be operational... but I wasn't quite sure...

If you love lateral G's, which I do, then Wildcat is about the only ride in the park that is a decent twister. Wildcat is actually one of my top favorite rides at Cedar Point, just behind TTD and Magnum. It seems to alway keep you on your toes with quick changes in direction. It is also pretty fun to see how much weight you can pack into one car to get that extra bit of speed.
