I was an engineering major. Now I'm an engineering professor. And I can tell you that you're dead wrong. We survey our alumni, and the companies that hire them, annually. Consistently, feedback suggests that our engineering graduates both want and need better communication skills.
A colleague recently asserted that 85% of all engineers leave the bench within seven years to move into management or related positions. You can bet that if you want to make such a move someday you'll need to know how to write well.
Of course, I'm sure Jeffrey Spartan et. al. will tell you that Michigan engineers are just stupid, especially this week, but that's another thread for a different forum. rec.sports.football.college anyone?
