I hadn't heard of any plans to reopen (I'd think that news would make the podcast). Its not stars aligning or anything like that, and I hate to call it superstition (thats too cliche) but its the best I've got.
Basically what happened is that the ride opened, ran fine for a year or so, then there was an accident. No one was injured, and the problem (I believe it was a wheel problem) seemed like a simple enough fix. Its assumed that the ride was fixed and has just been standing dormant waiting for the right time to reopen. It was named Steel Dragon 2000, because it was opened in the year of the Dragon, I'm assuming they're waiting for the next one to re-open it.
Goodbye MrScott
John
I suppose it'll sit and rot for another five years then, 'til 2012 rolls around. How absurd.
On a brighter note. I was born in the year of the dragon!
eat. sleep. ride! - Coaster apparel and accessories!
Ride on, MrScott!
If you google "Steel Dragon reopen", you'll get a ton of results on it supposedly reopening in August. I THINK I remember reading something "official" on that too, but I could be mistaken.
Oh, I remember hearing about that ride- how it opened in the Year of the Dragon.
Yes, Halltd- they are superstitious. Many cultures are, but we all have our different superstitions....like not putting our purses on the floor/ ground or not having a 13th floor in some buildings (even though we have one where I work).
"THE Top Thrill Dragster...THE Millennium Force...THE Wicked Twister...THE Magnum! How do you like those apples?!?!?"
No one was injured on the ride, but I think when the wheel fell off the coaster it hit and killed someone on the ground.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Oh, now that would suck. You couldn't even die truely enjoying yourself riding a coaster. You were walking below one and got nailed by a wheel.

I thought the wheel assembly just paralyzed the guy on the ground and didn't kill him? I still can't imagine being hit by a wheel assembly falling from that height. Take a look at the assemblies on TTD and look at how big they are.
Loopy- that would suck! Some poor guy just walking on the ground- enjoying his funnel cake & licking his finger, when BAM! That's horrible.
But honestly, it makes me nervous any time I walk under Corkscrew through the midway. I always think something's going to fall on my head.

So if it opened in the year of the rooster, it would be called Steel Rooster 2000? ;)

Arguing with a coaster enthusiast is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while, you realize the pig enjoys it.
Steel Dragon was set to open this year but due to they active typhoon season its continues to be SBNO. Doesnt make seanse to me.
Bow down, Bow down before the power of Santa, or be crushed, be crushed by----- his Jolly boots of Doom.

Leslie,
I'm picturing this guy eating a funnel cake & getting creamed by a wheel assembly. Twisted but ever so funny. Thanks for the laugh :)
Don't let up on the lovin'

Not. Close, but not quite.
Goodbye MrScott
John
If a wheel assembly fell off, there are several key failures that could keep a ride closed. One obviously the park's maintenance or lack thereof, two- the designer/manufacturer of the assembly, and three- it was probably made in Taiwan. A ride assembly doesn't just fall off without several parties to blame- and I think a redesign of the assembly would be a good idea before letting it open again.
