Ben,
There are responsible news organizations out there. Unfortunately, those of us in newsrooms who use good taste and discretion in our coverage often fall behind in ratings. "If it bleeds, it leads" is the slogan of many news operations these days, but here's hoping all of you have access to at least one outlet dedicated to telling the story, not shocking the audience.
Best, Ross

Responsible news organizations or even journalists are hard to find if they even exist. News shows have turned into Entertainment. They aren't about reporting the news anymore, and haven't been for some time. They're about ratings and making money.
I refuse to watch news programs anymore.
Actually Ben, the rating system is so dated that it almost obsolete, in our market anyway. Today, the News business is driven by demographics. Overall household numbers, our two stations are #3 and 4 in a 6-station market. We do, however, have the highest numbers in the key 18-32 demographic, which is why we are the most profitible stations in Columbus.
Please don't generalize ALL newsrooms as being ad-driven ratings whores. Some of us work very hard at getting compelling, pertinent stories on the air. Unfortunately our pertinent stories often look strange leading aginst the competition's shooting, robbery, or whatever.
I'm sorry your local media have left a sour taste with you. Please understand that, while you are hitting some of the biggest problems in the media, it is not every station.
TV Journalism is not dead, just endangered.
